The ULTIMATE cast for Half-Life 2: The Movie

Dr. Magnusson (from HL2: Episode 2) - Jon Hamm (with some makeup and whatnot to make him look older)

G-Man - Mark Strong

Ron Perlman (with a Russian accent) - Crazy guy in Ravenholm

Dr. Breen - Michael Douglas (not so much for appearance similarities but I think he can fit the character really well)

Dr. Kleiner - David McCallum

Dr. Judith Mossman - Julianne Moore

Dr. Eli Vance - Morgan Freeman (duh)

Alyx Vance - Rosario Dawson

and finally...

Gordon Freeman - Timothy Olyphant (with a goatee and glasses, obviously)

reply

and oh yeah, one more:

Barney Calhoun - Jeff Daniels (again, I know they don't really look alike but I think the character is perfect for somebody like him)

reply

I always thought Winters and Nixon from Band of Brothers would make an awesome Freeman and Barney, and they already have good chemistry buddy wise. They need to make this movie quick and capitalize on these two. Their appearances are uncanny. Good call on Alyx though.

...sorry, I was picturing Whore Island...

reply

ULTIMATE? You sure think highly of your own opinions don't you.

reply

That is a horrible list.

Jon Hamm? Mark Strong? They'd barely be fit to play Griggs and Sheckley. No, Ian Holm as Magnusson and William B. Davis (aka Cancer Man from the X-Files) as G-Man. Alternatively, Robert Patrick, Clint Eastwood, Gary Oldman or Edward James Olmos.

Ron Perlman? No. Omid Djalili.

Michael Douglas as Breen? Well, I admit I do like that idea. Powers Boothe would be interesting, too.

David McCallum as Kleiner isn't that bad, either. But Matt Frewer would be better.

Julianne Moore? No. Hell no. Mary McDonnell.

Morgan Freeman as Vance? Absolutely horrible idea. Sidney Poitier. Or Joe Morton for a younger alternative.

Rosario Dawson is far too trashy to be Alyx. There's a shortage of good candidates, though. Morena Baccarin.

As for Barney... Alan Tudyk.

As much as I like Timothy Olyphant, Gordon Freeman should not be portrayed by anyone. The movie should be shot from a first-person perspective and he should have no lines.

Funnily enough I was thinking I'd love to see Omid Djalili as Father Grigori, but then would it be weird having a Middle Eastern actor playing an Eastern European character? I think he might be a bit too swarthy.

I think Robert Guillaume and Merle Dandridge look enough like Eli and Alyx to be able to play them in film.

And I definitely disagree about seeing the whole film from a silent Gordon's perspective. If you want that, play the bloody game! I think either somebody should play Gordon (probably not Olyphant, but in a similar way that Olyphant gave character to Hitman), or just have a new side-story that doesn't involve Gordon at all.

reply

I would say that most of the voice actors could do a very good job. Just check 'em out on the IMDb page ;-)

This video is also quite interesting. Finding people who look like the character. shouldn't be so hard. Finding people with the right voices too, that's a problem.

A lot of good suggestions here btw. Coccyx has some great suggestions.

or .... Robert Guillaume as Eli? ;)

@redrome - I noticed you changed the cast around. Everyone that was black is now white. And everyone who was white is now black. Don't get me wrong, but putting in rappers isn't good casting either. Curtis would make good cannon fodder though. Maybe you were posting that for the lulz.

As far as the perfect cast goes, here are some ideas.

Gordan Freeman - (idk about this one yet, this is actually tough because when you think about it you really don't know what Gordan looks like. The box covers show him, but besides that the game gives you know way of knowing this. He also has no defined emotions. The movie maker would have to take liberties here.)

maybe Nicholas Cage

G-Man - Christopher Walken ( this is obvious and I am not sure why people haven't said it yet)

Barney - Jeff Daniels(the person who said Jeff Daniels is a genius, perfect guy for this part)

I won't say anymore, mostly because I believe the movie should portray the first game, not the second or later. It would allow the movie to target non-gamer crowds that never played the games. I also think Half Life 2's story has too many choke points to be put into one movie. However, Half Life 1 could probably be tempered into a movie without removing the parts of it that make it what it was. Sequels could be made, like Half Life 2,3,4,5, and so on. But these sequels don't have to match the games, they simply go through the timeline of Half Life 2. There is so many stopping points in the game that this would be easy to do.

G-Man - Christopher Walken ( this is obvious and I am not sure why people haven't said it yet)
Read some older threads on this subject. He gets mentioned time and time again. I actually have to agree, I think he would be very good.

reply

Christopher Walken has always been my favorite choice to play the G-Man, but I just watched Johnny Mnemonic again today (after many years), and couldn't help to think that Udo Kier could make a perfect fit for the G-Man as well.

His age could be a problem with potential sequels though.

reply

I actual think Hugh Laurie would be a good Gordon Freeman.

reply

Am I the only one who has thought Robert Downey Jr. as G-man?

reply

Alyx - Paula Patton (OBVIOUSLY!)

Eli Vance - Ron Glass (OBVIOUSLY!)... or Robert Guillaume

G-Man - anyone but Chris Walken

Freeman- Sharlto Copley (OBVIOUSLY!)..... or Edward Norton isn't a bad pick, or Mark Ruffalo, or an unknown would be just as good

Dr. Judith Mossman - Julianne Moore

reply

Ron Glass is actually a fantastic pick for Eli Vance. I've always thought TV actor Jack Wagner would make a good Freeman.

Unfortunately the only man who could ever portray a good Breen died today. RIP Dennis Hopper.

How about we don't make a Half-Life movie?
