Is this the best shooter.... ever?

and im not talking about relative good-ness... i mean side by side, what is as good as this?

other shooters i REALLY liked are:

resistance 1
resident evil 4 (maybe not considered a shooter)
red faction 1
half-life 1
doom 2
fallout 3 (maybe not a shooter)

anyway... i think half-life 2 is the best shooting game ever.

i know this type of thread has been done to death... but i would like to get everyone elses opinions.

cheers.

I think the Half-Life games are the best shooters I've ever played. I could not name a better shooter, or maybe even another game that is better than Half-Life. In my opinion the 3 greatest games ever are:

Half Life 1 & 2 (It's like the Godfathers of the gaming world)
Super Mario Brothers 3
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time

Deus Ex > all that crap

And Half-Life and Doom, nothing else is up there with them.

Comparing things side by side? Isn't that what relative means?

when i say relative i mean to take age in consideration. so with this discussion we are NOT talking about relative quality, if one game is only better because its newer, then the newer game is the better game. im finding it hard to explain, but im sure you guys know what i mean. i dont want to give any special consideration to aged games. for instance if there was an awesome game made 10 years ago, and it was the greatest game ever - back then. side-by-side comparing it the modern games, the story may still be great, the gameplay, etc might still be great, but obviously the graphics have evolved a lot in 10 years... and this awesome 10 year old games rating (now) may be greatly hindered by the [now] poor visuals.

anyway, boishock was great too, cant wait for the sequal.

thanks for all the input everyone.

Half-Life 2 has the best story, the best action, the coolest weapons, and the best puzzles.

It is still the best shooter, and given the innovations it had over other games at the time of its release, it was the best game of all time.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
and
Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne
are the the only 3 other games that even come close for me

TOO MUCH HAIR!! CANNOT SEE!! CANNOT SEEEEE!!!

It was certainly groundbreaking, as was the original Half Life. Not sure if its the best one ever though. It would certainly come very high on the list.

Other possibilites would be Crysis or Bioshock.

Killzone 2 and 3
The darkness
System shock 2
F.E.A.R

none of them top half life 2 but they are still really good.

Half-life 2 is my fav fps.

Other's that come close:

killzone 3
halo 2
F.E.A.R
portal 1/2
chronicles of riddick
call of duty 4/5/6/7....and so on
mirrors edge

others that don't come close but are still good:

left 4 dead 2
resistance 2/3
fallout 3
Crysis 2
battlefield series
elder scrolls oblivion (technically not fps but there is fps shooting)
elder scrolls skyrim (technically not fps but there is fps shooting)
perfect dark zero
the darkness

Best shooter to me ever. Bioshock is also very good but nothing can touch this game. I can always go back and play Half Life 2 and it never gets old.

"Is this the best shooter.... ever?"

Certainly not imho. Simply because in the contrary to the
original theme "run, shoot, think" they deliberatly left the
last term out for the second part. For example: no multilevel
puzzles to solve,no exploration needed,stupid NPC-"AI".
While Half-Life 1 felt like one of those ambitioned actionfilms
of the seventies where the player plays the main role,Half-Life
2 feels like a fun-shooter with vehicles in dystopia. And despite
the fact that the first game mostly played in a secret facility
somewhere in the desert the surroundings were far more varied than
in the sequel.
The only advancements of the sequel over the original are technological.
Gameplaywise its considerably dumped down. Still,Half-Life 2 is
better than other sequels of that time, like for example Unreal 2
or Deus Ex: Invisible War,which both practicly wrecked the franchise
for years. HL2 was also massivly hyped by a clever big budget
PR-campaign mostly to establish steam which came piggyback with the
game.
HL2 came out in a time where singleplayer-fps as a creative genre
was in decline because the focus of development was on technical features
rather then gameplay enhancements. And that simply shows also in
HL2. So in retrospect some older games in this genre (and its subgenres)
are simply better gameplaywise while looking freakin old nowadays.
The best comparsion that comes in mind offhandedly is HL1:HL2 like
Fear:Fear2. Well,along that line.
Imho better games from roughly that time are for example XIII,
Alien vs.Predator 2,Far Cry or Tron 2.
