What were the words on the pieces of paper he put on his face?

In the scene where the young man comes back after he killed the woman he loved he at one point writes some words on 3 pieces of paper which he puts on his eyes and mouth and faces the statue of the Buddha. Upon seeing this scene the old monk starts beating him with a stick and seems very angry. What did these words say?

I think it has something to do with see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. No completely sure though

Each paper on the ear, eye, mouth and nose says "shut".

I believe this is their tradition of dying, passing onto the next life/world. The young boy was trying to commit suicide (as it seemed to me they were adhesive tapes that would restrict air intake.
