Kidman again makes the same 2 mistakes.
It's obvious she wants to do comedy, but her only successful comic performance was in To Die For, in which she was savagely brilliant. Here, she duplicates two of the elements that made The Stepford Wives a disaster.
1 - she plays a comic role 'funny'. Instead of playing it serious and allowing the situations and dialogue to make it funny, she 'acts funny', and she isn't good at that. It comes off as forced - although in part and in her defense it would be hard to make this crap 'funny'.
2 - she plays a lead who has a group of 'amusing' girlfriends. They are dead weight, and make it feel like a movie only intended for women who don't know comedy.
Ephron usually has a better comic barometer, and Penny Marshall's name is on this too. I'm not among those who think women can't be funny. The talent involved clearly can. Just not here.
