funny how the people who play Endora, Aunt Clara, and Uncle Author...

Nail the parts exactly. Shirley McClain looks and acts exactly like Endora. Steve Carrell looks and acts exactly like Uncle Arther. And whoever played Aunt Clara acts exactly like Aunt Clara. It's like they were all born to play these remake characters.

HOWEVER. It's funny that Nicole Kidman is NOTHING like the real Samantha. No offense to Nicole. I loved her in other movies. But her american accent is annoying. Too whispery. She only somewhat looks like Samantha.

I just found that interesting.

I loved those three as well - it was the only proper link to characters in the show I thought!

reply

putting Nicole in was smart because she's very pretty and gorgeous just as Elizabeth Montgomery was. the other characters fit perfectly as well, all except will farrell.

reply

She does look like Samantha but her voice was always breathless, liek she was trying to be Marilyn Monroe but it made her seem mroe innocent and like...i don't know, sweet?

See, the problem was that Nicole looks nothing like Elizabeth nor is anywhere even close to her acting ability apperently.

The problem was that they couldn't decide which movie they wanted to make, just like Superman Returns; sequel, remake, or ?.

She plays an actress PLAYING Samantha, but has Sam's family members popping in.. Make up your damn minds!

That's what ruined it for me. They should have gotten Jim Carrey and remade the original story. Carrey in the Dick York role would have been gold.

Farrel plays the same jerk in every movie. Boring.

I thought I was the only one who saw Jim Carrey as Darrin. I mean when I watch Bewitched, I totally see Carrey!!! I like your idea, they should have had him as Darrin and kept the plot the same as the show.

Yeah, this movie couldn't make up its mind about what it wanted to be. And while I like Nicole Kidman most of the time, her character was just awful! Elizabeth Montgomery must be rolling in her grave.

I always thought that Dick York looked like he could be Jim Carrey's father. As for Samantha, how about Christina Applegate as a suggestion instead of Nicole Kidman?

reply

I thought the actors were spot on with those characters ... Endora, Aunt Clara, and Uncle Arthur...too! :)

But I though Nicole Kidman was good as Samantha too... (although not sure why she was using a 'breathy' voice). I think Gwyneth Paltrow might have made a good Samantha too.

I really wanted to like this film. I DO like romantic comedies... and like nora ephron too... but Will Ferrell ruined this movie for me.

Exactly!

Why the hell were AUnt Clara and Uncle Author in this movie? WHo were they? Were they the actual characters.....and they came out of the tv? Were they relatives of Bigelow who had the same names and characteristics of the show characters? WHO WERE THEY?

reply

Uncle Arthur was supposedly a hallucination but may have been Sam's father in disguise fixing things up - hard to say. Curious, though, that Aunt Clara seemed the same. I'm kind of lost on explaining it, all in all.

reply

Carole Shelley, who I loved on Frasier as a Jewish mother at Christmas, couldn't hold a spark to Marion Lorne as the original Aunt Clara.

The premise behind Clara and Esmerelda on the original show was even if you are a witch and get forgetful and mess things up or get overly nervous, it will affect your witchcraft as well. Clara was hardly forgetful and she would have never bothered with that spell or curse she put on Darrin. She would have been kindly intending to do it, then it would mess up bigtime.

reply

I disagree...

Carole played Madame Morrible in WICKED and that is where Kristen Chenoweth got the idea to cast her in the role when... Mrs. Wilson [from Dennis the menace] couldn't do it.

both looked exactly like they WERE Aunt Clara.

I liked the cast and thought all the actors could've fit the roles really, really well. It's hard to blame just Ferrel because he plays someone whose playing Darrin... So even though they could've (and should've) had Ferrell play the regular character, they made him this arrogant guy whose under weird spells. Same could be said for Kidman. She could've played a decent Samantha... If she was given the chance. I'm not sure what made them do a movie within a movie, but with fictional characters from the show popping up in "real life". Uncle Arthur? Aunt Clara? I'm sure it sounded clever in theory but wow, like another poster already wrote, they should've picked one road and stuck to it. You can't have a witch play a witch character but have all the same family members. Confusing.

The way I saw it was that "Isabel" WAS actually Samantha from the series, hence the relatives showing up. You may ask "how didn't Steve Ferrell's character figure it out?", well I guess he was put under a spell. After that, I "switched off" and really enjoyed the movie, it was charming (no pun intended) and the good cast helped, I even kind of liked Ferrell, which doesn't happen often.

actually I thought McClain (even if she was great as Endora/Iris) took a different, more calmer tone than Agnes Moorhead (this only comes from memeory so I hope the spelling is right). she doesn't look like Endora and didn't particularly act like her. I didn't care for Steve Carrel playing Uncle Arthur mainly cos I thought he was useless in the movie and didn't act very well his part (then again It was near the end of the movie and I was falling asleep). the actress playing Aunt Clara in the movie was perfect though. Kidman was all right, she came off pretty convincing and Ferrel just made me laugh so i'll excuse him for not acting.. Caine on the other hand.. meh

reply

I thought Nicole was perfect for the role. It was Will Ferrell who had no business being in this movie. Jim Carrey would have made more sense as Derwood...I mean Darrin.
