Hi there , i think the whole point of this board is merely to make point that, Indonesia is in fact coming out of the closet.
The fact that finally someone brave and accomplished like Nia Dinata have the guts to make a film that doesn't potray minority (be it race, religion, or sexual preferences) as a stuttering homosexual one dimensional comic "banci" character, such as been always potrayed in our poor production of sinetron .etc...
Nia instead opted to break the stereotype and actually tries to explore the psychological context of a gay protagonist, albeit in a light comedic theme...
And i think its about time, in this post-reformation era someone actually dare to take the risk of exposing such issues to the public, and this also comes from a film maker who happens to be a woman.
Aside from Arisan mbak Nia's previous credit is also the highly multi-layered "Cabaukan", again here, she actually tells a story of a minority culture in early days of Jakarta without actually exploiting or shedding some judgement over her characters, as a chinese-indonesian , I could not be more pleased, Lots of blessings to Mbak Nia , for I am sure she; along with Riri Riza, Mira, etc , will eventually lead this newly awaking Indonesian Film Industry to another level of breakthrough..
