Kevin B from Ithaca, NY read this

I just read all user comments for Arisan! I think it's a very nice little movie. It's technically flawed but judging from its tiny budget, the effort is quite admirable. All users raved about it except one. This Kevin B guy from NY, whose all comments in IMDB always start with:

---- "Hello all--for what it's worth, I'm in a doctoral program on Indonesian politics and returned this semester after about a year's fieldwork, most of it in Jakarta. I'm a big movie fan generally, so I went out as often as I could, and bought tons of local VCDs while I was there. Who was the intended audience for this film? The spoiled wives and daughters of the Indonesian super-elite whose antics are weakly and ineffectively parodied? The vast majority of Indonesians who could never afford even a single dish, let alone a full meal, in the film's central restaurant location? "-----

Hey, Kev. You blasted the movie because it tells the story about Jakarta's upper class while some people there can't feed their kids? So you're saying because we're poor we have to limit our creativity? For someone who's in a doctoral program, you're quite narrow-minded. And for someone who's in a doctoral program AND a BIG movie fan, you're kind slow. Don't you get it? The movie is actually mocking those rich people whose living among those poor people who can't feed their kids!

---- "This one I saw in the theater, since it opened while I was there, and, thankfully, closed soon after."----

Are you kidding? Arisan! was one of the longest running movies in Indonesia!

Oh, I read your review on "Kejar Amerika" which you rated 9/10. LOL. That movie did not even get a theatrical release in Jakarta because no exhibitor would want to put such trash.

Yeah...Arisan is talking about another side of Jakarta. Don't politicize the movie why the movie don't care & don't talk about the poor people, the movie portrait the awful truth of what's going on in Jakarta, the irony of the super rich people that live among the poor people. Why don't you watch it one more time, maybe you'll get the picture.

Earn that Doctoral degre with an open mind, & stop squaring types of people.

(pardon my grammar)

First off all i want to say that art is about truth, so am i your enemy if i say the truth?, i like the film very much individually, but concerning the content for the masses i have to stick with kevin, the problem is you have to be in the scene of the upper class society whetever your the leader or the follower of the pack to know and understand the logic of this film or else you just dont get the message in full, cause its about wealthy people doin wealthy things that the poor people cant do or should i say cant afford to do, how should you know something you dont understand?.

"From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs".the point is, i ask you?, is it nececery where 85% of the people in our country are striffing just to eat and survive with many religious and etnhichal violence arose, and thats a fact right?,then you throw at their face, an euphoria of borgeuis logic to them, in term of explanition, that the very wide range social hierarchy between the upper and lower class in indonesia, which resulting also a very wide range on understanding the overall logic between the upper class and the lower class, this movie potrayed a problem for the upper class in their world, where relatifly a small problem tends to blows up to a big tragedy, wake up and look outside, see a bigger tragedy, about starvation,homeless/orphan and genocide, is it nececery to turn their logic of pain & suffering to the borgeuis logic of pain & suffering, which i think its mean to choke them with upper class logic, the logic can turn the other way around but their social life remain steady as a rock, thus creating greater anger for the people in majority for the borgeuis minority, you think the majority of people understand their problem and feel sory for them in reality its even makes them more feell like *beep* because their low knowledge and their much diverse and complex problem, the message that the borgeuis get and the message that the poor people get, what i think is very much difrrent .

"Reason has always existed, but not always in a reasonable form" , the gay issue, is it something worth mentioning in a nation where sensitivity toward religion are very high, is it not provacative enough in the enviroment we are standing today ,that we have to add another issue that might cause a birth of another islamic fundamentalist in the near future. the problem is it isnt about a democratic thing of free expression rather than the will of practising tolerance

Well, you are true bout that, but I think you should make differences between art is about truth and entertainment is about making people happy and fun.

Firstly, I think the purpose of this movie is making the audience laugh (for those who understand the jokes), it's about how to entertain people. If you wanna watch art movie, please watch Daun di Atas Bantal.

Secondly, if 85% of people are striffing just to eat (which I'm sure u put wrong percentage here, it's actually less then that). Why can the poor watch movie about the rich ?? It's just a romantic comedy film afterall. So, the choice is only whether the audiance understand and like it, or they don't understand then watch another movie. And i think, the market segment of this movie is only for middle up class, since middle low would prefer to watch tv or Indian and Chinese movies. From 280 million people in Indonesia, maybe only less than 1% watch this movie.

Thirdly, have you been to Indonesia ?? Have you known about poor Indonesian here ?? Have you watched tv series called sinetron in Indonesia. If you have, you will understand that most of people who like sinetron are middle to lower class, and sinetron is just a bunch of tv series like Beverly Hills 2010. They love it, they enjoy it, and they are ok with the social gap between them and the film (Come on ... only a dreamer who compare reality and fiction film).

Fourth, once again about Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. Do you know about "the power of major silence". You only hear from news about how strong islamic fundamentalist talk about religion, however, I might say this islam fundamentalist is only 3% of Jakarta citizen who speak too loud to get attention, hehe. They have freedom to talk, but they relatively can't just ban all films as they like. So basically, gay issue would still survive here :D

cheers
