Do you mean win the show, or actually run up into the castle?
I think in the first series the ending wasn't the usual zipping about in carts with water pistols/lasers as usual, but the contestants had to physically run up the castle walkways while fending off the Emerald Guard.
As far as I know, no-one won at all in that season. So they changed it to the carts instead...and while still virtually no-one won, they did have a few. I've seen about three or four winning shows I think, and yeah...no ceremony or anything, although perhaps there was but it was cut from the UK show.
In the 3 years it ran there was only 3 winners. two via laser carts and one via water gun. The winners supposadly recieved 1 million yen...which is about 5000 pounds i think.
In the first series, they did have to run up the castle...personally i think that ways a bit easier than the water cannons.
I've also read somewhere that back in 1986 - 1989, when it was on japanese tv ( i think it was the channel WOWOW) the episodes were longer, and the Episodes on Challenge TV we see are simply edited versions.
