Gundam Newbie

Okay, I admit it. I've never actually watched Gundam before. I used to love Robotech and Voltron when I was a kid, and have always dug the genre. But for some reason, I never saw anything Gundam.

Anyway, with Pacific Rim coming out this summer, it's rekindled my interest in mecha-themed anime. I decided I'd finally check out Gundam, but I quickly discovered that Gundam is a HUGE effing franchise. Dozens of series' and movies to choose from. So, where does a newbie begin? Do I start with the original series from 1979? Does it matter?

Thanks!

If you're a religion, you can have a canon. If you're a scifi franchise, get over yourself.

I had a similar dilemma when it came to Gundam. There is a LOT of Gundam to watch. My first glimpse of the Gundam Universe was Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Stardust Memory was part of the larger Gundam universe, but I found the story to be pretty much self-contained. But this Gundam Universe still seemed like a large mountain to climb.

But Mobile Suit Gundam Seed is its own self-contained universe. It has similar themes as the original Gundam Universe, but without having to know all of the backstory. I thoroughly enjoyed this series and was eager to watch Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny.

So, I'd say let this be your first Gundam. And, if you enjoy it enough maybe you will want to watch the main Gundam series.
