I don't really watch a lot of Belgian movies (not that they're all bad, it's just not what I'm looking for), but _Daens_ was pretty good. It's an historical drama.
edit: Actually, there's also _Diamant_, which is a mini-series concerning the illegal diamond trade between Antwerp and the Congo, but I doubt you'd be able to find it abroad and with English subtitles.
Both of the above feature Jan Decleir BTW, he played the hitman in _De Zaak Alzheimer/Memory of a Killer_. He's in most of the non-crappy Flemish movies, and quite a few Dutch ones too.
You might get a more satisfying response on the IMDB European Cinema board.
The way I heard it, is that he had already gave his word to do some small theater show and didn't want to break it... Not even for a James Bond movie :)
he also turned down a significant role in Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
It's not integrity as much as it is stupidity in my opinion. Here he has a chance to work with kubrick/spielberg and cruise/kidman but he prefers to play in some lame community theatre...
I don't go see a lot of Belgian movies, but Pauline en Paulette really touched my heart. I think also Buitenspel is a very moving film. Maybe The number of Belgian movies is low, but at least there good. (most of them)
Even though i'm Flemish i don't watch a flemish movies. but i would suggest "De Hel van Tanger". English: "The Hell of Tanger" i don't know if you can see it in America of something.
I'm from Belgium ... And i think Belgian movies suck ... There just all so .. BORING! Can't help it ... The only ones I likes a little bit were Teamspirit 1 and 2
Jack Sparrow - Guard the boat, mind the tide... don't touch my dirt
Man Bites Dog- this was a minor art house cinema hit when it first came to the US in the early 90s. I own the Criterion Collection version of it on DVD, and love it to death.
De Zaak Alzheimer- just about as professionally put together as anything from Hollywood. But the story and acting were better than most US policiers.
Loved this flick! The main actor was so believable. My grandfather has the ending stages of Alzheimers (I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, My grandmother pays $3600 a month in care) There is nothing there in his head. If they could induce Alzheimers as a punishment for criminals it would be worst than the death penalty. The worst part is when they, themselves KNOW it is starting to happen to them. I think it is basically a mind spinning in circles but not going anywhere. It is just a terrible disease, and I hate it. He has had it severely for a decade. Enough of my sadness. This movie really studied the disease and the way he was feeling and forgetting. The movie is terrific.
