Belgian and European movies

Since this is the first Belgian film I've seen, I was wondering if the style (solidly commercial, not at all pretentious) was representative of Belgian movies in general.
I'm also curious as to the point of setting the story in 1995.
Finally, since the European movies shown here in the U.S. tend to be generally of better quality than American films, I would like to ask people's opinions if European movies are better than U.S. films, or if it is simply that the ones that get shown here are better (every country probably has their own version of, say, Man of the House, or Boogeyman, which never gets released internationally).

reply

As a European I agree with you

European films simply ARE better then american films. We haven't got huge amounts of money to spend, so no huge special effects, no stupid fighting scènes, but solid scripts and decent acting (we haven't celebrities who want to persue an acting/direction/singing/modelling-carreer...)

In general; I think that films are considered an art in Europe where the States have a more 'let's make some money, and give people a lot of blood, sex and trashtalk' mentallity...

reply

Ah, come on! If not a thing was changed in this film but it had been released in English, it would be a straight-forward Hollywood thriller. It's well-done, but the only reason it's in the U.S. in "art houses" is because it's in a "foreign" language.

reply

This movie is indeed very much Hollywood inspired and doesn't really qualify as an art movie.

European movies, like movies in any other region, can be divided in 2 main categories: commercial movies and artistic movies. European commercial movies, however, are almost only succesful in the country they are made in, while the artistic movies are much more internationally distributed.

De Zaak Alzheimer (Memory of a killer) is one of the rather rare kind of European commercial movies that made it abroad the home country borders. But still, it's one of the better commercial movies.

The reason the story is set in 1995:

* In 1996 Belgium was shocked by the Dutroux case. Marc Dutroux kidnapped 6 young girls (aged 8 till 19), locked them in his cellar and raped them. 4 of them died of starvation. The other 2 were rescued when he was arrested. Since child prostitution is one of the main themes in the movie, it was better to place the story before all of this happened.

* As a result of the Dutroux case, the bad collaboration between the different police forces was also exposed. The police forces were totally reformed since then. The rivalry between those different police forces is also very important in the storyline. The "rijkswacht" (the ones in uniforms in the movie) doesn't exist anymore today.

Although the movie is set in 1995, the police already had computers with flatscreens and a usb connection, as you can see in the movie :) There are quite a lot of mistakes in the movie because of the 1995 thing

European movies, commercial or artistic, ARE better than about 90% of American films. Better acting, better scripts, quirky, interesting, different and most of all: thought provoking. Most of the Hollywood productions are just so pathetically cliched, poor dialogue, politically correct and obscenely dumbed-down for any mature adult to enjoy.

The only decent American made films are the independent ones...and those are more European feeling anyway.

My Vote: Europe. Two thumbs up.

I LOVE European movies! Most of the time they're relaxing, feel-good movies to watch in the summer, but there are also a lot of dramatic movies.
As for Belgian movies... I must say that this is the first Belgian movie I really liked! And the reason is that this movie wasn't as amateuristic as I consider other Belgian movies to be... The first thing that came to mind when I watched this movie was: Wow, this looks like a Hollywood production!

Back in the 1970's, Hollywood made movies like this. A comparison would be the second Dirty Harry movie (Magnum Force), or excellent TV series like Dragnet or Adam 12, or perhaps the Police Story TV series. Then, Jaws and the original Star Wars movie ushered in the Blockbuster era. Since then, Hollywood movies have been just plain stupid. European movies, lacking big budget, have executed like the old Hollywood with excellent storytelling, great acting and directing, as well as staying above the absurdity of present day Hollywood. A good example of Euro movies with greatness is the American titled "Stolen Children". The acting in this movie is so excellent that it's a classic in my book and it is a crying shame that the Oscar committee hasn't realized the greatness of this movie. American Beauty was held up as THE depiction of a family unraveling. For a much better euro movie on the subject, I suggest Meiner Schwester Der Kuss. La Petite Sirene is a French movie about a man surrendering to a 14 year old girl taking over the life of a man she is obsessed with. It is an intelligent movie-one with subject matter so controversial that Hollywood would never touch it, but it is entertaining and compelling. Les Diables, is an excellent movie about how the system fails those with autism and other mental illnesses. Hollywood wouldn't produce such a bare bones look at a broken down system, so the winner over and over is euro movies.

AND THERE YOU GO !
Belgium movies and europian are NOT NEVER NADA amateuristic
the fact is that if european movies would have the money like americans then
the cliché hollywood scene would be in extremely serious trouble .
On this fact i think that american moviemakers are big cowards
because they very rarely try a movie that has a good and therefore ORIGINAL
script and scenario with actors who are way more better than those dashing-I'm-going-to-make-a-million-dollars-actors who besides some are rarely worth something.

Well here, in France, there's a lot of crap made to cash in on well-known actors and/or stars "bankable" on TV, which seems to be done just like American movies, with no obligation of results (it seems) and stupid, sometimes bordering on screenplays. Most tank at the box office but are made fr TV anyway. They just usually don't make it on most foreign markets !
(Not that there are not good movies that falls into the crack of course. See Hervé Renoh's "Requiem", criminally underrated, or most of the current horror trend, like "Martyrs", the most ballsy, intellectually disturbing movie of the last ten years.)
And sometimes, when Hollywood eggheads are too busy repowedering their nose and are not looking, good movies manage to be done in Hollywood !

if u want to see a good belgian film, watch "Man Bites Dog". It's very independent and very violent, but you'll never see another movie like it.

reply

Correct, it's a great Belgian film and it won a price at the filmfestival of Cannes (I'm talking about Man Bites Dog).

reply

I realy liked "Alles moet weg", you know, Stanny Crets (went to the same school as that guy) playes this closet homosexual who encounters a burglar (Peter Van de Begin) and they become best friends. It's a very humouristic film, but also touching at some points. Alzheimer was good, but too Hollywood.

I think it is ridiculous saying that European movies are definitely better than American movies. As a Belgian I have seen a lot of European and American movies, and even though you can mostly distinguish them very easily, they have so much in common.

I usually like Belgian movies for their simplicity, and because the setting, the language and the cultural aspects are very recognizable to me. But there are of course Belgian movies that I don't like.

Anyway, I could name so much more American movies that I like than Belgian movies, and the main reason is, of course, that the quantity of American movies is so much higher than the movies made in my own country. But I say this just to confirm that the US has produced some very good movies.

And if Europe has made a lot of nice productions, that is probably because the US gave them a very good example to look at.

What I hate about American films is that (for example: "the last samurai")
WE DON'T WANT TO SEE STUPID LOVE IN A FILM THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!

And that's what i like about EU films: less celebrities, strong script, no stupid love story if it doesn't fit in it!, and many others

thanks

reply

I suggest watching French, German and Spanish movies. They are mostly a lot better than what is produced in Belgium.

reply

I would suggest you all watch ex-drummer, now thats a decent belgian movie, very explicit tough :-)

Fact is that some of the best movie-makers from the USA are more popular over here (Europe) than in their own country.

Even big names like Woody Allen or David Lynch need to have support from Europe nowadays to make films.

reply

Possibly European movies are better than American ones - if they are, because the list of European crap is endless as well - exactly because European budgets are smaller. As a result European moves have to rely on superior script, character building and acting in stead of special effects. That is, if the European movie succeeds, which far from always is the case.
But granted: I prefer the very best European movies to the very best American ones. The exceptions I can think of (Vertigo, Sunset Boulevard, Derailed) have strong European influences anyway.

reply

"Possibly European movies are better than American ones".

Don`t think so at all - in fact, America has produced by far the greatest number of masterpieces throughout the history. That`s because of the sheer number of films being made there, and the superior budgets (in an expensive artform which film is, money does tend to help, create options etc).
