Better than Hero

The only things better in Warriors of Heaven and Earth were the story, action scenes, acting, cgi, should I keep going??? Don't get me wrong, I loved Hero but thought it was over-acting by Jet-Li and the constant referals to all the touchy-feely 'one land' crap, that bugged me. I did love those lovely landscape shots but its hard to take a bad picture of that landscape so no bonus points from me.

reply

really? i should go watch this movie then. because i really liked hero

reply

how have you both seen Hero and now this movie. Where can i go to see these movies?

reply

both movies have already been released in asia and can be get there. it takes a while to cross them over to the US, i dont see why not i love kung fu movies and will watch them even without subtitles.

seven samuri is by far the ultimate kung fu movie.

Before my time is done, i will look down upon ur corpse and smile!!!

reply

cool quote/hand writing btw

reply

Ehm... Samurai don't use Kung Fu. Kung Fu is Chinese...

reply

Yes - samurai use jiu-jitsu. ~grin~

reply

did you even see seven samurai? it wasnt about the fighting at all. in fact the fighting was pretty bland. also, samurai do NOT use ju-jitsu. seven samurai was not at all like the kung fu films of HK and china.

goddamn americans...

hero is not a kung fu film. its a wu xiao film.

also chinese CGI is "bad" because they almost never have the budget of american films. the budget for the matrix: reloaded + revolutions was over 100 million USD, the budget for hero 30 million USD. if you wanna see CGI, see reloaded.

im sorry but what you said about swordplay was garbage. how is swordplay hard to film? and how is it predictable? or any less "spatacular" than hand to hand combat?

btw, do you speak mandarin? because dont complain about the corny subtitles.

If you want to get people to stop eating McDonald's, tell them to see "Super-Size Me."

reply

Nah, it's Ken-Jitsu, not Jiu-Jitsu.

reply

Head on over to the video store. In the new release section.

reply

i'm sorry but errrr...omg...i understand you're subject to your own opinion but like...the editing?!?! the cinematography well...nothing special. you think jet li overacted? how about the corny lines and bleh acting by EVERYONE on set? like omg...the overly dramatic slow-mo death scenes... the cgi was CRAP! but it's ok, china's never been good at that (hey don't get me wrong, i'm a proud chinese but really.....their cgi has always been kinda dodgy). the fight sequences were jarring and honestly, swordplay is difficult to film and never look as spatacular as hand-to-hand combat. the techniques behind the swordplay were predictable. the token female played by vicky...was...i'm sorry did i hear voice over? lol...i expected much after hero and walked away laughing... the whole thing was a joke

reply

Just wondering, were you one of the dumbasses who gave hero a 1?

I gotta see more movies

reply

I saw Hero in the original Chinese release. It is a beautifully filmed piece of art which uses all of the modern techniques created by The Matrix and Crouching Tiger. The scenery, some of which I have visited in China, is stunning. You can say it is hard to take a bad picture of these places, but you are wrong. I have seen plenty of bad picture of these places. It is all about getting the right light at the right time of day that makes these places really show off. Without the low angle of the sun in the morning or evening these place go flat on film. Without a good sky they are dull and lackluster. This film does an excellent job of capturing places like the River Li, Jiuzaighou, Huang Long and Yellow Mountain at the best.

Hero's use of color, light and visual effect as important elements within the movie is dazzling. But the most important point to remember about the film is that it is the retelling of real Chinese history -- The story of the first emperor to unify China into one country and the attempts to assassinate him. That said, the story stayed pretty true to the ancient story instead of straying off into lala land like everything Disney does in order to pander to broader audiences -- Mulan e.g. If you want to see and even better retelling of the same story, rent The Emperor and the Assassin directed by Kaige Chen, which is a very faithful version of the story. However, it is much less glitzy and hi-tech. Instead of CGI, they have literally a cast of thousands.
Comparing Hero to this movie is comparing mangoes to lichee nuts. Both are wonderful and absolutely worth seeing. But enjoy them, whatever, on their own merits, not as compared to something totally different.

reply

The problem with "Hero" was the cold hole at the center of it: emotionally dead Jet Li -- that compounded by his not having a name.

The guy is dead; he should realize it and lie down already.

"Better than Hero"

lllllllllllllllolllllllllllllll

reply

This film is not better than Hero. Not in acting, not in special effects, not in cinematography and not even the musical score. I enjoyed parts of the movie, but to say that it is better that Hero or CTHD would be taking it too far. Just my 2 cents. ;)

reply

im still amazed he can say what he saied with straight face!

reply

It can't be compare to hero just because it a chinese movie to and released in america just 2 week after. This look more like a action movie, hero was a kind of feeling and poetry for the eyes for me, i didnt see Warriors of Heaven and Earth yet, but im sure it can't be compare.

reply

Warriors was so much better I think, it was just better crafted. Hero was a serious disappointment, it focused more on visuals than anything else, and if you're reading subtitles, you'll miss the scenes in all red grenn blue, etc. Also, Jet li, wasn't anything special, he really had to play off everyone else. I think the state of mainland movies is improving, but I would rather have a movie with only mainland stars to demonstrate their star vehicle, not any from a dozen other big deal movies in hong kong or taiwan.

Give me a chinese movie showing what their industry has to offer, and warriors is cloer to doing that, but it won't happen, and that problem for me overshadows any faults in Tiger, Hero, Warriors, or what I hope to be a great movie, the House of Flying Daggers.

reply

BORING! BORING!! BORING!!!
Yes, I'm talking about both "Hero" AND "Warriors of Heaven and Earth".

Give me "Kid With The Golden Arm" or "To Kill a Mastermind" ANYDAY over those pretentious, pseudo-serious "films".

Bleeaahhh!!!

Do yourself a favor - go watch a Shaw Brothers classic instead.

It's very funny to say that this movie is better than Hero.. From any point of view Hero is much much better than this.. Hero's artistic work, scenerio and acting is much much better tahn this movie.. I see something artificial in WOHAE's scenerio..and i think visual effects are not very succesful..

HERO..HERO...HERO...

HERO is the best film i have ever scene in marital arts genre..

reply

Damn you people! Forgive my language, I must learn to govern my passions.

First things first-

This was a great movie, and not because of the fight scenes! I hate it when people look at an artisticly driven movie and all they see is CGI and wirefighting!

Most actual Chinese and Japanese films aren't "movies" at all! They're theatre!!! You know why they're theatre?

BECAUSE MOST ASIAN CULTURES APPRECIATE ART MORE THAN FIGHTING!

That's why it's a MARTIAL ART, emphasize of the ART.

To them, the honing of ones mind and body is not thought of as a sport but as an art and a discipline to be cherished, not bet on and televised.

The only cultures who do think this way are the West and the Thai, and to the Thai it's kickboxing. So let's appreciate the film for what it was, cinema!

Damn you ingorant people, I'm just sad that most of you are Americans; nay, loud mouthed Americans! You give the rest of us a bad name, so just shut up and quite spilling your verbal sewage over the keyboard. You think that just because you filled out a questionair and learned to type at 35 WPM you can let the whole world now what trash goes on inside of your tiny mini-sized cerebulum!

Damn you all to hell!

Now back to normal Christopher, before we make a fool out of ourselves. Wait...to late.

Hey Tactics Master -

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but why completely sh#t on someone else (and their country no less) simply because you disagree?
For someone who extolls the virtues of "discipline" and "mind and body" relating to the martial arts
and asian culture, you seem very quick to let your emotions take over your thoughts.
Please read your post and listen to how amazingly self-righteous you sound.

I for one have been an avid HK film goer since the 70's and have literally spent nearly every weekend in NY's chinatown theaters soaking up everything from Shaw Brothers wushia pics to Micheal Hui comedies.
I have seen literally 1,000's upon 1,000's of these films.
I happened to hate Hero for the reasons I stated above.
Does that make me an "ignorant American"?

I know you weren't naming anyone in particular, but since I'm of the opinion that Hero was no big deal and that you seem to be damning or dismissing anyone who shares that opinion as "ignorant" and "loud mouthed", I felt it was necessary to call you out.

Take it easy my brother - and try to understand that not everyone has the same opinion as you - and that's a GOOD thing! I mean, really? What kind of boring world would we live in if everyone thought the same?
In addition, just because someone may have a different opinion than you, does not automatically make them an "idiot", or "ignorant", etc. etc.
Come on, now. This is kindergarten crap.

I loved this movie but i can't say its better then Hero. It parks itself right between Hero and Crouching Tiger i think, but then again, i may put Tiger above if I watched it again, haven't seen it since theatrical release. BTW, you should get the asian version of "HERO", the theatre version in the U.S. and the rest of the western world have screwed up the subtitles and cut scenes. "One Land" should be "All Under Heaven". When the army is chanting, they say "Hail! Hail!"

"You have been assimilated, resistance was futile!"

reply

If you think that W.H.E is better than Hero, I must say that you are completelly out of your mind or you have miss the whole deal...

Perhaps you didn't read my message before you replied, or English is not your strong suit.. In any case, try again.

Going back to the early stages of this thread, The Matrix: Reloaded and Revolutions are the two worst movies ever made. They hold the worst and most unoriginal story and their CG is atrocious.

Hero actually has good CG. Take, for example, the scene where (in the red story) Flying Snow defeats Moon and the entire Golden Forest turns red in a matter of seconds. It is not only painstaking to perform but is also suitable, iconic, and ironic.

Also, Samurai practice the art of Bushido Blade and follow the rules of Hagakure; It is a handbook written by a samurai, for a samurai containing all of the essential ideology and ways of combat using the Bushido Blade in combination with Hagakure.
Samurai were and are of Japanese origin and can not have been using Kung Fu. Nor had they been using Jiu Jitsu because Jiu Jitsu is a form of martial art, although also Japanese, that focuses mainly of fighting on the ground; Shoot Fighting and UFC use mainly Jiu Jitsu for its effective grappeling techniques.

Happy now?

D.

P.S.
Most samurai had eventually turned ronin (masterless) and were forced to ask for payments from others to become yojimbo (bodyguard(s)) which had eventually taken a turn for the worst and finally became, what is known todays as Yakuza.

Since aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba in the 1950s-1960s, it was never a "Samurai" art.
