I like realistic historical Chinese dramas for history's sake
Some other imdb posters are like me. We're not into the Crouching Tiger or Flying Daggers type of kung fu movies where guys fly into the air with supernatural-like abilities. Warriors of Heaven and Earth are about as realistic as one gets with ancient hack and slash sword fighting of the time. It wasn't glamourous or awe-inspiring as the stylized kung fu sword flicks of flying and high-jumping Chinese swordsmen. No, this is like watching Charlton Heston's THE WAR LORD (1965), set in the 10th century western Europe where Norman knights hack it out with Germanic Frisian warriors. Sword fighting in WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH show the gritty, grueling, cut, slash, and thrust violence with unglamourous, non-kung fu kicks and roundhouse punches to go along with the melee. That's what hand-to-hand combat was like in those days before gunpowder and effective firearms.
This movie reminds me of just how untrained and feeble I would be grabbing a sword and shield and trying to hack and slash with no prior training, experience, or physical conditioning. A lot of guys could probably emphathize with me. This is good incentive to keep one's privately-owned, legal firearms well-cleaned and oiled.
