Did Dolly know about Alim and Khaled?

I love this movie, but I'm a little confused by something. Did Dolly know that Alim and Khaled used to fool around when they were kids? Because it kind of seem she was willing to be in denail as long as her son got married to a good Muslim girl. But also it seem like she didn't know what Nuru was talking about when Nuru brought up their sons past relationship.

So my question is, does anyone think Dolly knew about Alim and Khaled?

You got to cover for me.
Yeah let me think about that...(pause)...no .

Doesn't Dolly take Nuru aside at one point during like the rehearsal and say she knew what they used to do when they were kids because Khaled's bedroom was right next to theirs (hers and his father's)? Then she says something like 'Your son has quite a set of lungs on him' to which Nuru responds "Oh God" and Dolly implies that that sounds about right (meaning she heard Alim, er, yelling it while he and Khaled were...). I think that's what I remembered hearing in that scene.

One point I don't understand is how Dolly could know about Khaled and Alim -- but Hassan didn't know. In the wedding scene I couldn't get over the way Hassan's face lit up with understand (and perhaps some delight) when Alim kissed Giles.

It seemed obvious to me that she knew and that it was 'just something boys do'. Khalid alluded to it in Alim's mom's apartment. I'm not indian by any stretch of the imagination, so someone else can correct me, but it seemed to be that men fool around with each other and that it's accepted, but not talked about.

reply

no its not something that goes on in Indian heritage. But...homosexuality etc etc is all very hush hush...behind the curtian sorta thing.

Well i heard in a doc that said that Indian boys are more likely at early ages to feel more normal attracted to other boys. it's because these boy have no ideal of being around girl unless they have sisters or girl cousins. Since they are around other boys so much it is more normal for these boys to dance in a sexual with other boys the way that most boys thier ages would dance with girls.

She definitely knew, but she what she didn't know was why Nuru was upset about it. She couldn't see the folly in pressuring her son to get married and "do what he was supposed to", and how it would make someone unhappy in the end. Nuru mentioned his b bride, but Dolly said it didn't matter if she had a husband who loved her or not -- "She gets to marry a dentist!" she said, implying that as long as she was financially secure (and could have children with him), she shouldn't care if her husband slept around with men or didn't truly love her. Dolly didn't care at all if anyone was made miserable; she referred several times to the wedding as "my day", showing that she expected her son just to make her happy no matter what.

Nuru said something similar on the plane ride. She acted proud when she said her son was completely and utterly devoted to her, and that his "fiance" loved her even so and didn't mind it at all. But then she took a turn; she never assumed her son should get married anyway when she found out he was gay.

Absolutely she knew about it. Her and Nuru had a conversation about it at the wedding. Dolly made it very clear that it didn't matter as long as her son got married and kept up appearances for the family. Also as long as she was finanially taken care of. However, Nuru could not share the same shallow and selfish motives that of which her sister held onto.
