Was he reprehensible?
Or was he hurting:
-- because his boyfriend jumped back into the closet when his mother came for a surprise visit?
-- because boyfriend's mother was treating him two degrees lower than dirt?
-- at the Mother's constant criticism of the man he loved? Absolutely NOTHING about Alim was good enough for her. His job, his house, his roommate, his cooking, even his cookware was unacceptable.
-- because his boyfriend's backbone suddenly evaporated? Alim was so completely subservient to all of Mummy Dearest's criticism he did everything but kneel and touch his head to the floor.
That sleazy cousin was my notion of reprehensible. However, that seemed to be okay with Cousin's mother as long as he brought in lots and lots of money - and eventually gave her a grandchild.
Remember, too: In forgiving Giles, Alim admitted his own shortcomings having had a part in it as well.
I don't think this instance of infidelity was part of the promiscuity portrayed in so many cheap-shot all-gays-are-like-that movies.
I think they will weather this storm and their partnership will be the stronger for it. -- And now they can get married in the UK.
While neither of us cheated, there was a great lot of stuff my guy and I did survive over 37 years of richer-and-poorer, sickness-and-health, drama-and-comedy, closeted-(in the southeast)-and-out-(in California).

"To talk of many things,"
Of atoms, stars and nebulæ,
Of entropy and genes;
And whether one can bend space;
And why the spaceship shrinks.
