like the book?

I did a paper on the book for my english class and I want to see the movie but I won't see the movie if it ruins the book, like, is the movie even any good? Is it even like the movie because it seems like its not.

reply

just seen it and its sort of like the book in that it strands off each character quite nicely - personally thought it was a bit more style than substance...fans of the book may not love it

i am a massive fan of the book...and of garland and the pang brothers, altho i think perhaps danny has more of the talent :P

and to be honest i had a hrd time understanding what was going on in the film, and i have read the book at least 5 times...nothing like the book!

It had bollocks all to do with teh film... I mean it had a couple of teh same characters and situations, but missed out nearly everything, and absolutely everything significant, from the film. This film is soooo *beep* dissapointing!

I haven't seen the movie, but the summary doesn't read like the novel at all. I have also heard a lot of negative buzz regarding the film. Alex Garland has written some of my favorite books, and I don't care to watch another one of his movies butchered by Hollywood producers (ie The Beach).

The Beach is my favorite book, and the Dicaprio movie just plain sucked. There is so much internal monolouge and self actualization in Garland's novels, it looks to be impossible to positively transfer his magic to the big screen.

This isn't a hollywood production, I'm quite sure. And I thought it was very good, different, but thematically it was the same, and I enjoyed. I don't think I'd want a straight adaptation to the book anyways.

This was a cross between Matrix and City of God. Oxide Pang sort of struck the connection between people and time intersecting lives ala Amores Perros.

I think Oxide Pang should make a few more mainstream films. It was much better than Kaos' Ecks vs. Sever adaptation to be sure.

why is it set in bangkok though? wasnt the book set in manila, philippines?

reply

never mind, i saw it. ehh, nothing like the book.

reply

the book was all about the Philippines, the language, characters, history, dynamite fishing etc... I haven't seen the film but I don't see how it can work set in Bangkok.

I came here to ask the same question. Usually I prefer a book to the movie, because I have a wild imagination. But in this case it just seem like a stream of conscious type flow. Sometimes that gets on my nerves in a book.
