Do you think Butch really loved Cliff?

For the first half of the film you see Butch's level of compasion and caring. He warns Cliff before they even get together. He says that he's bad news. He plays with the kid sister. He shows himself to be a pretty decent guy. He has problems with drugs but they're not exactly out of control. Cliff is shown to be as smacked up as Butch a lot of the time.
I think it's only after what happens in that flat that things slide out of control for him. I think he knows what he's done and recognises how far he's sunk. What he takes as a normal part of his every day business ends up damaging the one person he loves. That's when things go down hill rapidly. I think he loved Cliff but hated himself and what he was capable of. That's what pushed him over the edge.
Yes I agree with ur interpretation. That is the reason why Butch suddenly becomes a drug "addict"!
shareOdd. I never felt that Butch loved Cliff. I felt that Butch viewed them as friends (going to the movies but not kissing). I thought it was really odd at the end when Cliff referred to Butch as his boyfriend. It never seemed that way at all to me.

it happens i was in a relationship with the same type of guy i mena wed ahng otu but hed never say id love or kiss only when he was in the mood
shareWell, Cliff was a virgin in the beginning of the movie. When you've had very limited experiences you might think of him as your boyfriend. Maybe years later, when he was more experienced and had had some decent relationships, he wouldn't look back on Butch as one of his ex-boyfriends.
