He smokes a cigarette for the usual reasons: it's a moment of relief, and he's taking his goodbye from the world as he's going to be monk again.

This isn't christianity. There are no sins. Only karma. Smoking = lung cancer, money for cigarette company, pollution, etc. There is no right or wrong, no cosmic creator that will punish one.
