Any reason for the nudity?

I'm not a prude at all but in the film the night before the dive the female character is lying on the bed fully naked. From watching the scene I could not see any reason for this? Or is it just me?

reply

Id say lying in bed naked is a fairly normal thing to do, if they had invited the neighbours in for an orgy then i would say it was unnecessary.

People do lie in bed nude without any plans to have sex. Married or not.

My man and I do that. If we want to be warm we cuddle, if that's not warm enough we throw a comforter on us. If its too hot we are nekkid and not touching each other. *shrug*

We aren't nudists, though :)

Now that this has been brought up, I will say that I am a nudist (or atleast will be with the oppurtunity). By that, I mean I went to Miami for two weeks last spring, and went out to nude Haulover beach for several hours on Saturday and Sunday, May 6/7, and was nude the whole time, and never in my life have felt as comfortable or at ease. That was the first time I had done that, but only because I am from the Carolinas and there is nothing around here like that at all (both states are so conservative-sigh). But I was planning to move to Miami, and had plans to regularly go to this beach, and was looking very foward to it. I then decided to return to Charlotte for the summer to get a car, then return last month. Some things happened, and I have not been able to yet, but as soon as I do I will move back to Miami permanently, and will often go out there nude. So yes, I am a nudist as far as being nude in public places that allow it are concerned. I'd also do a video like this, or pose like this for an art class that had it, if could find these oppurtunities. And celebrity couple John Stamos and Rebecca Romojin held nude pool parties at their LA based house when married (saw this in PARADE), and I often thought how I'd liked to have gone to these (or even held them myself). So I have been aware for years that there are really nudists, and it is only what I just desribed. Thank goodness Miami has this beach, but the Carribean, where Open Water took place, has many, and I have wondered if Susan and Daniel went to one earlier in this trip (I think it is certainly possible, as Haulover was packed both those days). And I did think often while there then that I was Daniel, and Susan was-well Susan, and fully nude like that again. I also thought about Lisa and Cynthia from Red Eye like this while out there, as this movie and Open Water are connected for me, and the hotel they were at was right near this beach (ones on here that also saw Red Eye will realize that).

Well, I'm back in Miami (returned December 16, was not able to get job/car), but still seem to really like it here, and returned to Haulover Beach on Sunday, December 17 for a few hours, and have been back over ten times since, and plan to continue going whenver can. And it has been very crowded every day I've been with others like Susan in this movie, and they are just regular people that don't have problems with this when they get the chance. Another thing, I am also a devoted vegetarian (ie my signature), and go to the Aventura Olive garden most nights after being there to eat the garden salad, but I'm typing this at the Sunny Isles Beach library now, just up from Haulover Beach (where I will go later today). I am also a total non drinker, but John Barry and Errol Flynn were both notoriously heavily drinkers. But they were both very liberal as well, and it just seemed very strange tome that if you were fans of these two men you would have problems with simple nude beaches.

I know, wtf? We're debating female nudity in a film, and then this dude starts naming names (John Barry and alcohol? Where the *beep* did THAT come from?) and bragging about the beaches he's been naked on and what the hell does any of this have to do with seeing Blanchard Ryan's tits?

I'm ROFLMAO, yet at the same time I feel so sad.

I'm in agreement with I_John_Barrymore_I. This is a mite disturbing.

In interviews, the actress kind of admitted that it largely thrown in to be shocking/salacious. I'm down with that.

reply

who?....alot of people...
especially in a warm climate...

...ur NOT a prude? hmmm

and yes, im sure many people realise nudists actually exist. big shock right there.

reply

Actually, a lot of couples (married or otherwise)sleep together, and lie in bed together, just prior to sleeping, sans clothing. And not necessarily for the purpose of sex. Many people (my wife of 15 years and I included), simply find it more comfortable than wearing pajamas, which can tend to bunch up if you move around in your sleep. And since it would be rather pointless to put pajamas on, only to remove them before going to sleep, this means any time spent reading, watching TV or just talking in bed before going to sleep, is also done clothing-free.

Also, and most seem to have missed this point, earlier in the scene they established that it's "f--king hot in here", because the A/C was broken. I think that this is a very realistic aspect.

That said, I also agree that in the context of the movie, it was a rather gratuitous (if enjoyable) display. Even as I was watching it, I was getting the impression that it was just put in for a quick thrill for the young males in the audience.

Realistic, yes. At all integral to the plot, not really.

Exactly. This part of what bugged me about it. The other thing that bugged me is that we saw her lounging nude and not so much as his bare bottom. He slipped into bed without showing any of his private bits--not even a side-butt (to borrow from Family Guy) shot, as if he always has a camera in the bedroom. What's up with that?

Gratuitous and unfair nudity, I say. If you're gonna do it, make both of 'em show significant skin.

reply

I agree that it made no sense to the plot of the movie, and in the movies, they all know that apparently sex sells, and if anything, got teen boys attention.

And I think it was sexist of them not to show any of the guy. Not that I was wanting to see either of them, but if that was the reason, the A/C not working, why isn't he showing us something? Especially since he obviously put on shorts for the next scene of them swat mosquitoes or whatever. If that was the real reason, he'd still be naked!

It's bloody warm, that's why. Ever been in the tropics? It can be a real drag, those hot nights. You undress so that you cool of as much as possible.

Also, they've been together for a long time, so they won't be shy and not show their bodies.

It's a touch of realism that gives this film a more credible feel to it than Hollywood flicks with screaming hotties running around in far too tight shirts.

reply

Thank you... they were actually in a hostel. (in reality) there was a fan, no ac probably... and yeah. its more comfortable. (i can't recall but didn't she take a shower at sometime?)

also, it wasn't done in a demeaning manner, and not in your face tna.. it wasn't vulgar.

reply

Well for one thing they mentioned that the AC was broken and they are in the Caribbean. I'd want to be naked too. And if you can't lay down with your significant other and be nude without the intention of sex....I'm sorry that you're you.

reply

I've been sleeping totally nude ever since I was like 13 years old, I'm 27 now. Weather I'm alone or with a girlfriend, weather we were going to have sex or just go to sleep. I sleep naked.

reply

My fiance and I sleep together naked every night, and lie around naked even when not having sex... I imagine its pretty common.

reply

I'd say that it is. I am a nudist so I like the idea of nudity when comfortable anywhere, even in social setting. But the funny thing is that when I tell people about my nudism and why I do it all kinds of people talk about how they love being naked in private, but would never do it in front of random people. Either people who live alone and do it whenever alone, couples who talk about how one or both is naked all day and night when they are just chilling at the house or even people who grew up in the kind of house where nudity around family members was totally normal. There's a lot more of us than most people think.

reply

I would assume the director found out the actress was willing to get naked. Why the hell would he NOT include that? It definitely helps the film, show a little bush in the first 10 minutes and you sell anyone clicking through on late night cable.

reply

I think many people are missing the point here - or maybe I'm looking at it from a different angle

I LOVED the scene - but by the same token - if I was an actor making a film about beeing stranded at see I would fail to see the relevance of having to be naked and show more-or-less a full frontal to the camera and the whole world. YES some people do sleep naked; YES the Caribbean is hot - but from a film-making point of view - she could have been under the covers up to her shoulders or in a bra and it would have made ZERO difference to the storyline.

I agree with making films realistic - but only where necessary - couples do sleep naked but showing it for no reason is pointless - people use the toilet - does that mean we should have seen her crouching over the loo ? That's realistic, too isn't it?

Basically the scene was thrown in for no reason - and the actress displayed to the world (although she obviously agreed to do it) for no particular purpose other than "titilation" - if you excuse the pun. It wasn't even a love scene !

It's a big world, SmallTownSim. Grow up and get out a little. YES -- MANY people, NOT just nudists -- singles, couples, married or not -- hang out, lounge and even walk around their home naked. Lying in bed especially. Many people I know take off their clothes the minute they come home from work. So yeah, it happens. Take a poll LOL.

reply

Well, I'm definitely not a prude, but neither am I a perv. I don't identify myself as a "nudist" either, but I can tell you that I love being naked at home. I was not raised this way, but it feels perfectly natural to me that when I get home after a long day, the clothes come off. I certainly do "lounge around in the nude" and I don't see anything wrong with that.

To each his own...

reply

I lay naked on the bed all the time... underwear tends to make my jewels sore and overheated. nudity is perfectly acceptable and very normal.

you'll find this to be true when you grow up.

The nudity was provided for basically the same reason it's always provided in movies today: the girl is hot and guys in the audience would gladly sacrifice their left nut to catch just a glimpse of her naked.

reply

My wife and I sleep naked.

If it's warm then we have covers - pretty sure most of friends do too.

reply

I do. Just because you don't doesn't mean nobody does.

reply

Why on earth wouldn't you?

I have been with the woman who is my wife for nearly 12 years and we sleep together, naked everynight.

I always sleep naked unless I am sharing a room with my friends - they prefer me covered.

Certainly no nudist but have no issues with being naked or having my family see me naked.

reply

not a prude here- but unless plans are at hand, i for one would like to be warm. LOL

If you remember correctly SmallTownSim, in the previous scene, the guy was explaining that the air conditioner was broken. Therefore a possible explanation is that she was trying to cool down. Regardless, she had a nice body and I'm hardly complaining.

reply

I live in Australia, its hot, today it got to 42.2 cent, I and my wife lie naked on the bed at times to be cooler, its not a prelude to sex, just a comfort and not being ashamed of our bodies. Perhaps those ppl who find themselves unattractive cover up... just saying.
In this film the couple are good looking so to see them naked without sex brought about realism and accuracy/documentry style film-making.
Seriously, couples (especially long term partners) get naked ALOT in front of one another both during and nonduring sex (specially hot climates).

reply

Previously in the film we are told that the AC is out. Perhaps it was too hot for clothes, like pajamas. But I don't think taking your panties off would help. I think it was probably a move by the director to highlight the independence of the film (as if that wasn't clear enough), by giving us a little female underparts shot.

Not everyone is comfortable with sleeping/walking around freely in the in nude--that doesn't make them a prude. it's just personal preference based on what they're used to.

But when all is said and done, you all in this thread know very well why she was shown naked: to sell tickets to teenaged boys.

Oh hell, they showed her funny naked, why couldn't they do the same with the guy for female viewers?

reply

I couldn't agree more. Classical Greece was full of beautiful naked statues. Most figures nowadays are better at least partially clothed. Nothing is more disgusting than a super fat or skeletal old woman or man in the buff, or people of any age who are ugly, pot-bellied and out of shape but a lovely well-formed young woman or an athletic young man is a different story. There is nothing more beautiful than a young near perfect human body as nature intended. And there is nothing wrong or unusal in people in general lying in bed naked in the privacy of their own home; they save a lot of electricity in the hot summer months. It doesn't make sense to wear a night dress or pyjamas with the AC on.

I find nothing inappropriate, unrealistic or gratuitous about this nude scene.

If it is so NATURAL why don't they show the MAN naked? Don't give us this "it's natural" bull! Like someone said earlier, taking a crap is natural but they didn't show that.

reply

I haven't even seen the movie, but know enough about the plot to understand the point of this scene.
It is not only to show the intimacy of the couple, but also to emphasize these two as vulnerable and human.
Why didn't they show the man nude? Because in our backwards culture, it is almost unacceptable to show a man full frontal. You can probably count on your hand the number of times it's happened--Boogie Nights and Velvet Goldmine are the first two to come to mind. I think there's a Harvey Keitel movie as well. My point is, could I name the number of movies that have a naked woman in them? Well, no--because there are too many!! It's not right, and I think the argument that "men just don't look good naked" is a bunch of crap, but that's the norm in this culture.
What's sad is that I would guess the filmmaker did it to emphasize their humanity, not to sell tickets. But like with everything, poor Blanchard Ryan is taken out of context and splashed all over the internet just for being naked. That takes so much away from this movie and the character she was trying to portray.
Again, I haven't seen the movie, but that's because I know if I did, the reality and tragedy of it would make me cry.

reply

I haven't seen the movie either. Is it actually possible to defend a scene in a movie one hasn't seen?

reply

the man was naked, but, like the girl, covered up his lower half. hers slipped. big deal.

reply

Ummm, the man WAS naked. He grabbed a sheet and covered up (so we didn't SEE his nudity), but he was just as lacking in wardrobe as she.

reply

Whereas i do think it was gratuitous nudity, particularly because the actress turned towards the camera and we got full frontal nudity when she turned off the bedroom light when the actor remained largely covered, it is in fact the case that my wife and i sleep naked and during warm weather we both do lounge around with no clothes on in the bedroom.

reply

A normal thing to do is also go to the bathroom, but they didn't show that. I thought it was pretty funny/odd they had that one bit of nudity.

reply

There was another thread on this movie's board that asked the very same thing, titled "and the sex scene". It was very popular, and got nearly 100 responses from the time it was posted last spring until being taken off just recently. I don't know why it was taken off, and I was sorry it was, but last spring I did have it photocopied, and have it. I wrote my reply on it, and explained my view of this, but I will repeat it here. I did think Susan being fully nude in the bed with Dainiel the night before their scuba trip was in a way necessary to the movie's plot, because the whole movie really centers on their relationship and being together, which they are for the entire movie (beginning at their house right before they begin this trip). So I think this was to add to their being together, and put emphasis on the fact that they were on vacation alone together, and doing things that people would normally do on vacation (one of which is have sex). And in spite of what joy goff wrote, I do think couples together do sleep naked sometimes (and a poster on this other thread said they often do when on holiday). And because their being alone on vacation together was the whole point of this movie, I do think the nudity in this scene was somewhat necessary to the plot of the movie. It would have been basically the same movie without it, but I don't think would have been as effective. I will also admit I am a male, and think Blanchard Ryan is beautiful, so I was very happy it was in there for this reason also, but I still think it was relevant plot wise. It is not just you at all, as alot of the posters to this other thread seemed to feel this same way about this, but I just don't see it that way, and feel their was a definite reason for it.

"I happen to be a vegetarian". Lex, from Jurrasic Park

reply

hereminton, I don't think your argument for the nudity being necessary is that valid. You don't need to see her naked to know that they are together doing things couples do, people would understand that perfectly well without it. That said, I do agree that it is relevant to the movie and don't have any problem with it or have a reason for it to not be there. It just isn't necessary.

You watched it, you can't unwatch it!

reply

nah, hereminton is right, it adds to the couples intimacy level in the film.

the point is that they are not like almost every other couple who are bored with and sick of each other after a year or so of being together (married or not), and have no intimacy between them anymore, the "been there, seen that, done that" syndrome. so by showing this couples still vital love for each other in this one particular way, the movie becomes more tragic; a normal real life couple we would not care as much for, and to be honest we could comfort ourselves that some (most?) couples who went through the same ordeal and who were sick of each other anyway were at least out of their stale, old, cold-comfort, tired, boring, marriage misery. it's fantasy, hollywood. watching two real-life, totally average, fat, dim-witted, white trash, ugly fat *beep* floating around in the ocean arguing with each other over whos fault it was they were stuck there and how they hate each other would hardly stir our emotions, interest, or sympathy for them would it? i, for one, would be cheering the sharks on. :P

and after 4 years of being together i still sleep nude with my gf often (we're engaged, so be quiet :P) and love to just hold her while we're both nude without any sex involved before or after. we do this a few times a week, especially in hot weather, or both sleep just wearing our bottoms. anyone who thinks couples don't do this shouldn't be with who they are with, for it's mere cold comfort and financial security you are together for, not love. and don't give me the "kids might come in" b.s., lock the door, duh, or just be smart and don't have kids to begin with, having them is the best way to ruin an marriage, not to mention your entire life.

reply

I don't know where you get the idea that every couple becomes tired of each otehr after a year. Even if that were true then it kind of cuts away from the "normal" arguement doesn't it?.,,,Also, if "every other" couple does nto do that then they are probably going to wonder why the movie couple is doing it.....and therefore be confused and the scene is pointless.......

The nudity was to imply that they are having problems. Daniel wants t have sex, but Blanchard refuses right at th every last moment. The conversation they have before sleeping is the key

"Do you mind if I rip your throat and eat your heart?"

You can have that kind of same implication (wanting to have sex) even without the nudity.

the guy said earlier that the air conditioning wasn't working.... maybe that's why?

reply

Yeah, it occurs to me that it is probably awful hot out in Fiji, and they probably welcomed the lack of clothes. Not to mention that I'm sure many attractive yuppie couples tend to sleep in the buff. The movie used nudity (as far as I can tell) to establish a personal connection with the characters. It really felt like they were a natural, real couple. It helped eliminate the feeling that we were watching actors.

If it was so important (and I'm not against nudity in films) to show the intimacy and closeness of their relationship, why wasn't he naked as well?
Someone in here said she was naked and then he wanted to have sex and she didn't? (I went to the bathroom when this happened and didn't see the scene) So why did she get all naked in the first place? I mean, if I'm "not in the mood" with my boyfriend, the last thing I'm gonna do is flash him.

Grrrrrr!!Aaargh!!

reply

I've just watched this film - and I cant work out the purpose of that scene. there are no other efforts to give the characters depth, I just think it detracted from the film. I'd much rather that had been dropped and more emphesis put on the dive team and there awareness of their error and perhaps how they came to terms with it.

reply

Weren't they in the Carribean? I am pretty sure it is quite warm down there; perhaps that is the reason for her nudity. Furthermore, I don't think the nudity was necessary for the plot, but then again neither was the bug scene. Together, though, I think both scenes possibly add to the idea that these people are very ordinary people. In a way, it kind of put me into their shoes; but I guess I am one of those "weird" people that sees absolutely nothing wrong with lying naked in a bed without having sex.

reply

"Weren't they in the Carribean? I am pretty sure it is quite warm down there; perhaps that is the reason for her nudity."

Exactly. They needed a draw to the teenage male, just in case the sharks weren't enough ... or someone was reading all of the reviews on the movie and were about to skip it.

Yes, couples (married and not) lie around nude. BOTH nude. Some not. Some couples are both topless or nude, even if they have kids around. Sometimes the kids join the general attire and sometimes not (mine don't.) Nothing sexual about it. If there is, that's why you get a lock on the master bedroom door, if there is a problem. But this nude scene was a cheap ploy at ticket and dvd sales, nothing more.

The point of the couple's intimacy problems and such could have been easily shown without the nudity. It was ratings, people. Simply ratings. And search capabilities.

She gave up in the end. He died. Waste of a movie, IMHO. Ticks me off and I actually bought the stupid thing at a discount (cheaper than a rental at the time.) Haven't watched it since. Depresses the heck out of me.

reply

Well so far, we've been told it was to show the intimacy between and to show the problems..........hmmmmmmmm anyone buy the idea it was just to show it for the sake of shwoing it.....?....not lie Hollywood would do that.oh no.......my problem with it is that regardless of the reason it could have been shown in another way....I think you need to be very careful when dealing with "based on actual event" stories....people tend to think eveyr thig is true..when in reality about all anyone knows is they got left and were never found.........no one knows if they were getting ready to have sex, if she turned him down or etc etc etc.....I thought it was a bit dusrespectful to the couple......and I buy the problems between them more than the intimacy seeing how they fought a lot......not that I buy it at all since once a gain no one knows

reply

I sit around the house naked all the time. I guess you were just raised by your parents to think of the nude human body as "dirty". It's not your fault, but you should really give it a try. It's awesome. Oh, and by the way...I loved that scene!

reply

LOL!!Actually, growing up, my mother openly unabashedly answered any questions and openly discussed anything having to do with sex or nudity with me and my siblings. I don't think the naked body is dirty and I have no problems being nude in my own space or with my boyfriend. It's just that I don't understand why she is naked in front of her boyfriend when she's "not in the mood". It seems like a nasty thing to do to your boyfriend to deliberately get him worked up and then say "No". She doesn't seem like a mind-games-playing person in the rest of the movie. It makes the nudity in the scene make no sense or it at least seems stupid. They were trying to mimic "Hollywood" in a low-budget amateur movie. It was gratuitous.

I've seen a few European movies and the way they depict nudity is more complex and has a broader perspective than the way Americans depict nudity. I once caught a scene in a European movie of a guy who gets up out of bed (totally full-frontal) crosses the room, pees and goes back to bed. It had no other meaning than that and came off as a somewhat boring action. American movie makers would think something was wrong with showing something nude as boring. If an American filmaker included a scene like that, it would have been changed in some way (he would've walked or behaved a certain way) to make it mean something sexual. American movies almost always depict nudity as being something sexual when it can mean a variety of things. European movie makers have a more mature perception of sex, nudity, etc. than Americans do. I don't believe that her nudity (in Open Water) is "offensive" or "disgusting". I'm just calling a spade a spade. Sorry about the rant. Didn't intend to do that.

Grrrrrr!!Aaargh!!
