Metaphor for hell?

I'm probably stating the obvious, but has anyone else considered the underground system represents hell or some kind of limbo?

Hell, purgatory, limbo -- take your pick, I say. The movie, as far as I can tell, is a Hungarian version of Jacob's Ladder, perhaps involving a fallen angel.

I thought that particularly when watching that scene where Bulscu is questionned by the suit and the huge map behind is glowing orange

I kind of thought that it was more a hell on earth, like a living hell that most of us are in. Like depression. Fear or phobia.

Great movie. I love it.

I can see that, too, but I lean toward a literal hell/purgatory/limbo/subconscious still.

speaking of fallen angel, has anyone noticed the similarity of the lead character (including his appearance and even the blood soaked face of his around the end when he fights the pusher) with MAX PAYNE (from the video game). i noticed the similarity from the very beginning and the more i advanced into the film the more i felt like the character is very much inspired by MAX PAYNE. anyone agree?

Yes, it's quite easy to interpret the whole movie as some sort of symbol for hell or purgatory or something. I'm glad, however, that the director didn't go too obvious with this metaphor. I mean, some less intelligent people could have turned the whole thing into a sci-fi movie by including a big reveal, where the main character is revealed to be dead and waiting to pass on to the next stage, or some stuff like that.
