You hit the nail on the head there! They had an emotional connection and helped each other through their pain. Tobin also grew to care about her whilst protecting her at such close quarters.

But I don't think they were in love or had any desire for each other though.

For most of the movie, I kept wondering when the eventual sex scene was gonna be. But I realized right at the very end that maybe that's not what was happening between them.
