Nicole Kidman's performance is really underrated

There's always been something that struck me about Nicole Kidman's performance in the 2005 thriller, The Interpreter. I saw the film when it was initially released on DVD. Sure, I didn't understand the movie I was watching in terms of the plot, but emotionally I comprehended the film entirely using Nicole Kidman's acting. I've rewatched the film over the years, as I've matured I've grown into finding a much beauty behind Kidman's work.

For an actress who's played roles such as depressed poets, mentally unstable mothers, and a dying courtesan, Kidman's role in The Interpreter may be one of her most unusual characters, which results in the most unique performance of her career. She nails the African-British accent, which is a starting point for Kidman to tell Sylvia's story.

Sylvia has faith in peace, her entire belief system balances on the weight of peace. Kidman portrays the character with peace surrounding her like a bubble. There's a calmness that Kidman uses to drive Sylvia through the politics and personal affairs of the film, I've been overcome with a calm state while watching her. Kidman captivates our interest and we zero in on Sylvia's journey.

Whenever Nicole Kidman explains her character to the audience, she always starts in the face. Her eyes are immersed with specific emotion that attaches to the viewer; she makes us feel. The bulk of Sylvia is understood by the audience through Kidman's eyes. Sylvia, like all of us, has loved ones that motivates her future actions and has a tragic past that shapes her beliefs. Kidman excels at the role, targeting Sylvia's human strengths and weaknesses, and lives on them.

Sylvia's character arc is advanced in one scene where Kidman shows Sylvia's pain and racing thoughts in the restrained manner Sylvia wants us to believe she can contain herself in, but Kidman knows that Sylvia succumbs to her unresolved grief and emotions. Grief is hard to pass onto an audience in a film, but strangely, it's one of Kidman's strongest acting areas. Nicole Kidman is sadly forgotten for her terrific in The Interpreter; I know To Die For fans will jump to disagree with me, but it may be her best work that hasn't received an Academy Award nomination.
