for everyone who defends the black cast...

the honeymooners was about the struggles of a white working class man and his wife, and their wacky neighbors. It was a product of the time.

Now...imagine they made a big screen version of Good Times with an all white cast? Mclovin as JJ? It wouldnt work. Good Times is also very specific to race and struggle and a product of it's time.

Not everything is or should be interchangeable.

Yes...wholesome white entertainment in which a man threatened to beat his wife on a daily basis. Please, go spout your racist rhetoric somewhere else. If this movie was made with a white cast it would still suck because the story line was boring and the writing was lackluster, but it would probably have a higher rating simply because of the white cast. I'm black, and I didn't like the movie, but the casting was the least of this movies problems because the actors were left with dribble that even Oscar-caliber performances couldn't elevate.

and entertainment that depended on the fact that the audience was smart enough to see that those threats were empty and came out of frustration and a certain amount of immaturity. Anybody who watched that show knew Alice had the upper hand on Ralph. His bluster was that of a kid, a character flaw in a basically good guy. And Alice totally knew how to handle him and knew he would never hit her.

You cannot apply modern criteria to past actions. This was in 1955. A man hitting his wife was pretty normal in 1955. "Spousal Abuse" was a bit like drunk driving - not really even a crime at the time. I don't believe that people thought those threats were empty - I think most people felt that it was just funny that he was always threatening to send her to the moon and she was so drunk she kept talking back.

I'm not really taking a side, but the earlier poster who pointed out that the "wholesome" aspect of this show really doesn't exist - but I feel that supports the OP's post, that it was about the working whites (they were lower class in the original) - who did drink a lot and have a lot of domestic abuse and lack of opportunities. But, I think that COULD have been applied to a black American cast as well, since a lot of the problems of the white working class in NYC have been felt by other demographics.

In reality, the parties involved in this film were not of the calibre of entertainment as those of the original series had been (evidently).

I think by 1955, such a thing wasn't as normal as some would say. If it was normal, Ralph would've actually hit her sometimes.

Apparently it was still OK to beat your wife by the late 1950's, Ricky Ricardo did it on numerous occasions. He'd grab Lucy, throw her across his lap and spank the crap out of her. I'm surprised in today's PC environment those scenes have not been edited out of the reruns.

reply

Oh please... A comedy spanking is a bit different from wife beating. It was part of the slapstick in the show. Not meant to be taken seriously. Like the 3 stooges poking out eyes is not meant to be taken seriously.

The biggest minority in America is the individual.

Pazuzu. You gotta watch I love Lucy again when when Ricky spanks lucy. That was NOT comedy, that was a spanking. He had the upper hsnd, and chastised her like a child. And Lucy did exactly what Ricky told her to do in the episode I'm remembering. The disagreement led to the Ricky spanking. Now Alice may have not put up with it, but I wouldn't put it past old Ralph to think that it's OK to give your wife a whack or two to keep her in line

Where are you coming up with references to drinking? None of characters drank with any regularity, and in fact, at least in the original 39 episodes, there was only one episode with any real drinking and it highlighted the men being lightweights because they never drink!

Have you ever actually watched the show?

Congratulations. Would you like the prize of a banana for that wonderful drivel you wasted time in posting?

reply

So the best way to counter that is by making it "ghetto fabulous"?

He was not being racist. He was being truthful with some very good points. Absolute truth, the first person screaming racism is usually the racist.

You are the real racist ballsack face.

reply

The first ones to call ppl racist are usually the REAL racists! Im WHITE, so i guess to a BLACK person as yourself that makes me automatically RACIST. STFU with calling white ppl racist! I CANT WAIT till TRUMP gets in the WHITE House and gets rid of the ILLEGALS and rioting racist blacks and liberals in this once great country and make it GREAT AGAIN. TRUMP 2016!!!

reply

This movie is just racist and obnoxious. Poorly acted and poorly scripted.

The simple reason this failed is because it's nothing like the source material, it's not even similar, might as well be called Barbershop 3.
I wouldn't mind if the movie was actually funny but it's about as entertaining as watching paint dry.

After a while, i didn't let the fact that the cast was black bother me, if anything, i kinda thought the race switch added a more soothing blend to the story, despite the fact i think the TV show was not that great, nor did it need to be made into a movie. However, i am also sadly one of those people who thinks Cedric the Entertainer does NOT live up to his name, simply because he's the SAME DAMN CHARACTER IN EVERY MOVIE HE IS IN!!! His stand up is probably the only thing i can really admire about him, plus, i've seen him in real life interviews, and he's somewhat of a stuck-up *beep* Mike Epps i like, but only in small doses. Gabrielle Union is not a good actress, and Regina Hall is just plain annoying. John Leguizamo and Eric Stoltz i think tried to lighten up the movie with their appearances, but it just didn't work. I swear, one of my friends looked at me after we saw the trailer and said, "The Kramdens and the Nortons were not black, this is pathetic". I'm not racist by any means, but i have to be honest, i thought that at first too, but i didn't let it bother me like most people. I gave it a chance one day and rented it, that was the biggest waste of a rental i ever endured. If you like Cedric and Epps, then give it a chance, if you're a racist fan of the old show, watch something else, this will only fuel your anger. I wasn't angry about the race of the cast, i just thought the movie, itself, was awful.

Most of the African-American people I know hated this movie too. Simple because it's lousy to begin with notwithstanding the cast. One of them told me "that's NOT the Honeymooners and the should'nt call it that."

Are you completely insane?

'The Honeymooners' was about the working class - that's it.
As long as you're working class, your ethnicity or race doesn't matter.

'The Honeymooners' is dealing with you.
