about the history of Brazil

At the end of the movie, there is a scene when people who suffered from the drought (and I guess they lost almost everything), they decided to move deeper, to Amazons, and so does Johann. My question is, - cause im not familiar with history of Brazil- was it a common thing, made on a big scale? Did thousands of people moved from dried areas into Amazons, Can someone please tell me how many?, or, perhaps was it just one incident, shown in this movie??

I'm from Brazil and that's not so common, I think. Might have happened on the 40s but never heard anything about it. Most people from the northeast region (the region depicted in the movie) move out to São Paulo, in the southeast region.

It was quite common fom the 40s until the 80s, in a movement of "colonization" of the west. The migration was stimulated by the Government, who financed the trip and even gave the land. During that time there was no concern about the environment, and the perspective was that the Amazon Region was a big empty space that was supposed to be populated. Today, great part of the inhabitants of the Amazon Region are sons or grandsons of these settlers.
