What I really like about this movie is the artful way both actresses change their roles. They live in a sort of an inescapable Time trap and all that sand belongs to a gigantic hourglass.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

But, fortunately, Maria finally meets the outside world leaving her tired mother behind. What happens next is brilliant, in my opinion. Fernanda Montenegro plays both characters and a special rendevouz occurs.

Why did Mrs. Montenegro play both roles? Because the characters were older, you could say. This is not the whole answer!

Since Maria gained knowledge of what lies beyond the dunes, she finally could understand her mother and the silent war between them came to an end. Now, they are equals emulating the Einstein's twins and the final dialogue endorses this idea.

Oh my... What a great movie and a spectacular conclusion!
