They live off of seafood and occasional scarce plant
unknown, but most people in hot, arid climates tend to remain indoors(shade) while the sun is out
because they can ... maybe it's to symbolize taking the relationship to the next level, beyond the sand

How do they gather the seafood? Do they have boats? If so, why can't they leave by navigating the coastline?

Masssau told them when they first saw the boat that it was only for fishing. The seas were too rough. They would have had to go out into the Atlantic Ocean to sail anywhere.
