Need help on the characters

Let's use these terms: grandmother, mother, granddaughter

1. At the end, when the army guy is driving the 2 women in his jeep, who are they? Are they the grandmother and the granddaughter? If so, what happened to the mother?

2. When the army guy has sex the first time, 20 years earlier, it was with the mother. When he had sex the 2nd time, was it with the granddaughter?

3. The final scene. Was the gray haired lady the grandmother or the daughter? Was the younger woman the granddaughter?

I liked this ok, but I thought using the same actresses to play other parts at the end was a little too cute for me.

I know this is a really old post, but I just watched the movie.

First, there are 3 women: Dona Maria (the grandmother), Aurea (the mother), and Maria (the granddaughter)

The grandmother dies about half way through the movie when the sand collapses into the house.

So to answer your question:
1) This would be Aurea and Maria, as Dona Maria is already deceased
2) Yes, the second time was with Maria.
3) It was Aurea and Maria. This is evident because the older woman says "Maria. My daughter" when the younger woman comes in.

I didn't find it that confusing, although the time jumps probably could have used something like "20 years later" but they do allude to it with starting in 1910 when she is pregnant, then the marker says 1919 when Maria is a child and the army guy references "the war" (WWI) that she is unaware of. Then the more modern WWII airplanes overhead when Maria is an adult, and finally near the end of the movie they talk about man setting foot on the moon, as well as Maria now being dressed in 60's "hippie" clothing.
