How did his father die?

Im just now watching this movie and I'm enjoying it. However it's in French and not subtitled, I don't know French at all. I'm following the story fairly well I think 😀 anyway. Why/ how did his father get killed? I'm sure it has to do the necklace he had him steal. But why? Was it a double cross? The police?
