It's Not Fair!

When I watched the series for the first time, I kept saying that to myself the whole time. It's not fair to Chise and Shuji; they didn't deserve this. They deserved to be happy.
You know, there's a song from the musical Aida that I think fits their situation perfectly. It's called "Written in the Stars," and it goes something like this:

Is it written in the stars
Are we paying for some crime
Is that all that we are good for
Just a stretch of mortal time
Or some God's experiment
In which we have no say
In which we're given paradise
But only for a day
