D.E.F.E.N.S.I.V.E

tells the tale.

Defensive is as defensive does. Everyone wnats to protet their false ego and false pride.
I take it the defense means it is actually terribly accurate in the subcultures it depicts.

Like what the others have said, this show focuses on the wacky and colourful sides of Japanese life, and what they have portrayed is true. They aren't lies or slander - it's just stuff that ordinary people don't get involved with.

I was in Japan two years ago, and, well, it looked a lot like the Japan in Japanorama. Workmen in cool uniforms, gothic lolitas at Harajuku, maids and otaku in Akiba.

I got the impression that "normal" Japanese people are embarrassed by the otaku/moe/maid thing. When I told a Japanese businessman that I was going to visit Akiba, he began to warn me about something I'd find there. He had trouble coming up with the words in English to explain it, but from his expression, I was expecting something like predatory transvestite hookers that would drug you and rob you. It turned out to be merely "moe", but he was obviously very uncomfortable with it. Maybe I should have brought him a gift of a robot-maid-with-cat-ears pron DVD...

Anyway, Japan is a great place to visit. I wish I had a door in my kitchen that led to Tokyo so I could eat every meal there.
