Who else thought Gay Perry was the coolest character in the movie?

Normally I dislike 'gay' characters in movies. Usually they are written into scripts for either social commentary, self righteous script writers railing against 'homophobia', comic relief with a gay twist, or just hack script writers who want to put a politically correct character in their story, or bad writers looking for 'gay punchlines', none of which are appropriate for the most part.

I loved Gay Perry. He was smart and his sexual preference had nothing to do with his heroism or intelligence, but the gay element did come in handy several times! LOL. I want to see more of this character! Funny, sympathetic and bad ass when he needs to be. A gay action hero. If it were Perry, I'd buy it.

I agree. Gay Perry and Omar from The Wire are probably 2 of the most awesome gay characters of all time.

You are forgetting William Dafoe in the Boondoock Saints. We had a discussion about this in highschool when the movie came out.....that doesn't seem like 7 years ago to me :S

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Gay Perry was easily one of the slickest characters ever. The dude was hard-boiled but also humorous. Very cool performance by Val Kilmer.

And I also totally agree with the OP's critique on gay film characters. They're almost always a caricature of homosexuality and, while I'm not gay and cannot vouch for a gay person's thoughts, I find that irritating and insulting. Gay Perry is far from that, he doesn't hide his sexual orientation, but he's not immensely flamboyant about it.

'You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?'
'Yeah, he told me you're gay.'
*BANG!*

Babe's brother Doc in Marathon Man - reading comments on that movie's board, apparently his orientation was so understated that viewers did not know he was gay!

I also love the pun in his name (Gay Perry, instead of Gay Paris).

Holy cow! Never caught that one! Gay Paree! LOL I must be dense. hahaha or as they used to say in the 19th century "How are you going to keep them on the farm after they've seen Gay Paree!" :D

He was cool. But mainly because the script was cool.

A bit redundant, don't you think? :D The script is EVERYTHING. If it was a POS then 'not being cool' would be the least of Gay Perry's problems. That's akin to saying "The operation was top notch, because the operating surgeon was top notch". It goes without saying. No one would say "The operation was top notch because the hospital has beautiful architecture". :D

True, though a good script is the HEART of a movie, actors can do well with mediocre material and still kick butt. I think everyone agrees that Val Kilmer did extremely well with this character. And Val has had his ups and downs. But this was an awesome Kilmer performance.

I love the quip about "you're right, I'm a big tough guy" when he strikes the pedophile. He says it with such pathos and tragedy, it was amazing. It was established back in the hospital scene that both Kilmer and Downey's characters had abusive families and (I believe) both characters had bad fathers who beat them. It was a triumphant moment for a character that 'could' have been a tragic basket case. He was going "Here I am, a Gay man, and I'm more of a man than you are you sorry sack of s**t.' The brilliance of the script and performance was that the audience was cheering seeing a younger man beat a crippled old man (all about the context my friends, all about the context!)

I use this movie as an example when I talk about script writing with my friends :D

Don't forget Eddie The Dane from Miller's Crossing. Probably the toughest, bad ass gay ever portrayed!

reply

But Eddie the Dane wasn't very cool.
