The Wendell Baker Story deserved much better.

Ive seen several topics on this board on how this movie was being shown in several film festivals but yet didn't have a pure release date. My friend had the dvd of it somehow and at the time I thought it was just me who hadn't heard of the movie. It was quite surprising, I mean a cast of Owen and Luke Wilson, Eva Mendes, Will Farrell and Eddie Griffins and yet the movie is going almost unnoticed. I agree that this isn't one of those crazy funny movies I have ever seen, but yet it is moderately funny and the movie isn't that bad for a one time watch. The way some people have been bashing this movie it's as though there's no movie worse than this, and I've seen some real bad movies make it to release dates and just can't imagine how this didn't. Owen Wilson doesn't really have a huge role to play although he should've but he does leave an impression. Luke Wilson and Will Farrell's confrontations were few of the funniest scenes in the movie. Owen Wilson and Eddie make fun at one lady's funeral, although I found that funny I guess there are a few people who may not really like that kind of humour. As I said the movie is a decent comedy for a one time watch, and although the story may not be that good it's still a decent comedy no doubt. The scene with the two old dudes trying to pick up the chicks in the store was funny on the dot too, someone posted that one them was their niece - well that was one of the funniest scenes in the movie. But I think the Wilson trio Andrew, Owen and Luke did a great job with the soundtrack of the movie, that by far was a refreshing change from the usual.
This movie deserves much better acclaim and treatment than it has gotten, its definetly cinema material and not some real art movie which is only meant for the film festivals.

Thanks for the post, it was a great read. That was very generous of you to take the time to share with those of us who may never get to see it.

It would be nice to get to see the movie eventually, I do not understand why we can't. In my frustration I've come up with a few plausible causes, please add to or fix them as you see fit.

Maybe it's being saved for a special occassion, like the next Presidential election? Imagine, "Vote for me and you'll FINALLY get to see The Wendell Baker Story..."

Perhaps the Baker family hasn't released the full rights or something.

Maybe it's part of our new FEMA/Homeland Security Pan to help calm and cheer up the public? Thus it is ready and waiting until after our next natural disaster...

Was the story line TOO thought provoking?? People didn't leave the movie wanting to give ex-cons a second chance did they??? ugh, eegads! <New Englander sarcasm>

Or maybe some rich oil tycoon bought out the rights to the movie so that only his or her sweetie could see the movie, a true romantic...
