Mormon Smoking In Film?

Whats up with the character played by Larry Bagby smoking? Larry Bagby is a big time "Mormon" country singer. How is this allowed?

reply

I don't remember him ever actually getting his smoke..

Even when he died he never got a light.

Perhaps this was an inside joke.

Though the guy who was smoking is also Mormon apparently

My guess it's lettuce, not nicotine, in the cigarettes. This is the prop that movie makers use for under-aged actors (ie Paper Moon [a good movie btw]). It's still bad for the lungs because of the smoke, but the addiction associated with nicotine isn't there.

Oh woof...

you may not know this, but there are many people in the world who are of one religious persuasion or another who do not actually follow every single rule and regulation prescribed in said persuasion to the letter.
i know, i know... its a crazy concept but its true i swear.

Uh... you completely overlook the fact that the character played by Kirby Heybourne smokes too. Kirby is a "big time Mormon" as well. The thing people don't seem to get is that when you are an actor and you portray a character doing something, it doesn't mean that you yourself do that thing or even think its ok to do that thing. And when it comes to smoking, there are ways to make it look like you are smoking without you actually smoking. Classic example. The X-Files character known as The Cigarette Smoking Man never actually smoked a cigarette the entire 9 years of the show.

A non-smoker smoked on screen? Robert Downey Jr. portrayed a black man in Tropic Thunder, it's called acting.

Mmmmmm, watchoosay? Mmmmmm, that you only meant well? Well I'm sure you did.

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground, try this sig with spinach!

No. Robert Downey played Kirk Lazarus (Aussie) who portrayed the black guy.

Kirby Heyborne once mentioned in my hearing that he used rose petal cigarettes for this film. They are not a lot healthier, but they don't have the addictive nicotine and aren't strictly off-limits for Mormons like tobacco is.
