I would love to know the dates when users gave this film a rating

This "movie" was originally a pilot for a TV series on Showtime. The series itself was never picked up however and the only time to my knowledge that an audience had had a chance to see it was recently at the Toronto Film Festival. There it received very favorable word of mouth managing to even surprise some critics who had considerably lowered their expectations for a film directed by Spike Lee. So I'm going to guess that just as was the case with "Baadasss" this is another example of IMPD voters rating a film they have not seen. This happens so many times on this site its a joke.

There are 28 votes....you do the math

reply

Are you that stupid to think that 28 people who actually attended the Festival in September to see the movie voted and almost all of them gave the film a thunbs down DESPITE the fact it was an audience favorite. Using your logic I guess only the people at the festival who hated it voted. Get real. And stop pretending you were even at the festival. It was a case of mental migets with agendas giving the movie a low vote without seeing it simply because Spike Lee directed it. Business as usual around these parts.

reply

you are one of these so called mental midgets since you're going on and on about people you havent heard from.

1, the ratings on imdb are rarely what they should be.
2, some people who dont like a movie wont rate it fairly, just like people who DO like a movie wont rate it fairly. this movie is not a 1 or a 2. it's not a 10 either but Im willing to bet that's what you voted.

this is a good movie and would have made a good weekly drama as well, but you HAVE to know that there are some people out there who really didnt like it. taste is subjective afterall.

reply

I'm watching it right now, and I live where this takes place. Not THAT deep in the ghetto, but close enough to know that this is pretty damn accurate, and from a 'film school' perspective, its very well written, and very well directed. The acting is extremely natural and dead on to how people talk and act.

I hate spike lee but im glad to see someone finally do an accurate portrayal of San Francisco, thats not the post-card like areas with the golden gate bridge ten feet away and the richest neighborhoods 20 feet away.

Anthony Mackie's character is a reluctant gangbanger, so if you didnt belive him as a gnagbanger, then he did a good job. I think thats what they were going for. He knows he is smarter and better than his friends, but he finds himself living that life. I truly want to know what happens to the characters...

reply

I honestly could have watched 3 more hours.
Brilliant!

reply

that's exactly what I was thinking, like at the begining when he's tellin lil o(I think it was him anywho) that there are better ways to make a living than gangbangin.

reply

Sheer stupidity set aside, I don't know why the chimps at Showtime didn't let this continue as a series. They might actually have had the chance to break out of second-tier status with this show, especially with all the buzz surrounding it.

And I agree, I'm tired of the low ratings for decent movies given by wanna-be "film experts" who can't respect a film unless someone tells them to.

reply

yeah, i just saw it...very well done.

reply

the only conclusion I can draw is, maybe they like being second tier*shrugs*

Yeah I'm going to have to a agree with you folks on this. I think Spike Lee is a hack but this was a really cool involving film with characters I actually cared about, none of that Jungle Jim philosophizing or the racist stereotypes that are typical for most other "Spike Lee joints." This was a good little movie.

List me all of these Lee flicks which there are these racist stereotypes you are whining about?
