How did the kid(Rocky).....

How or why did the kid(Rocky)had thatinstict of going where the woman(whom mother was raped) like he had some connection with her or something?

I know that the director's trying to tell you that all the characters are connected in some way but can you explained this scene of the kid and the woman that wanted to be operated?

reply

I believe that character (Malissa) is his biological mother... Didn't she sell her eggs to earn the money to travel, move on, etc. once her mother died? So, I guess Rocky couldn't help but gravitate towards her and his presence/their connection (I'm not sure) made her change her mind about not having the operation.

On a side note, I loved that we didn't know she couldn't see very well and the world was blurry to her the whole time! Very touching. Sigh. I love this movie so much...

Minor correction ... we did know that. The first time we meet her, we see how blurry her vision is as her opthamologist friend has given her a pair of glasses, and she chooses to step on them. The world is blurry to her, but she prefers it that way. The nice thing is that it doesn't seem to affect her photography.

Wrong Vicki is his biological mother the reason he goes to Malissa is that he did not know how to react so he began to walk around and when Malissa saw a child as good as he was, she realized that she wanted children as well and decided to back out

Vicki gave birth to him, but it was a donated egg. This was even stated in the conversation Sam has with her in the store. Malissa was the egg-donor, or at least that's what's implied. (Probably unlikely, as she lived her whole life in North Carolina, and Vicki is in Vermont, and the odds of eggs being shipped that far are probably pretty slim, but for the sake of the story, we just assume it was her egg.) The fact that they even mentioned that Malissa had donated eggs pretty much confirms it. None of the dialog in this film was there for no reason. It's very carefully put together.

reply

actually i know a woman in California whos was a surrogate mother to a couple in Florida, so the odds of the eggs being shipped far away arent as slim as you might think.

reply

There are some intended parents who will travel to the donor's home state, but it's usually the other way around. Malissa would've had to spend at least a few weeks in Vermont.

I think you are right. That was how I took that scene also.

She (Melissa, who burned down her trailer after her mom died and who was getting a tubal ligation) was his MOM. The sound editing was a little annoying in places - I found that ambient noise sometimes obscured lines of dialogue - and Melissa's accent didn't help - so you may not have caught that she was selling her eggs on the internet to help pay for her tubal ligation! So we were led to conjecture that she had sold an egg... and Sam Blue had bought it... and Vickie had been the woman with the womb who had carried it... and Rockey was Melissa's kid! Too cool! And then when Melissa met Rocky, she didn't want to have the operation, because she figured if there was one kid that fracking cool, she might want to have one!

Well, lemme tellya, that floored me. Loved it!

reply

Yeah thanks all for that insight, I just finished the film, and I loved it. Now I love it just a bit more. I hope Schaeffer does more in his life with film. This movie really gets you thinking. I'm very impressed.

I know she burnt down the trailer to eliminate her past...but seriously, so melodramatic...what if she had started some cataclysmic forest fire in the process, and inadvertently killed other people by doing so...all because she couldn't make a simple call to the county coroner to pick up her mother's corpse...don't get me wrong I loved this movie, but still, she was very irresponsibe.

Yes, the fact that the director chose to emphasize that Mellisa sold her eggs to front the tubal ligation and also chose to let us know that the boy was carried by Vicki probably in-vitro, not conceived via normal means, (We had a contract....!) tells me that Mellisa was the mother.
What seals the deal for me was the fact that they were so much alike, that is, they both had the natural, spontaneous, though unconventional idea of smashing glasses they did not like.
I think Vicki may had had an incking that the boy was hers from a biological standpoint and may have thought that she might want one like him of her very own one day.......

reply

she sold her eggs online, he was a product of one of her eggs that the man bought.

reply

I believe the boy was searching for a girlfriend for his father; their objectives in NY was to get tests and find a gf, and since the former was finished and the latter had failed the night before, the search was still on.

Rockys eyes looked allot like Malissa. I was clear that she was his biological mother. They did a good job with the casting matching their looks. I had to look it up just to make sure she wasn't his mother in real life. Also Rocky asked her if she wanted him to smash the glasses which was a further indication they had a connection.

So Malissa sold her egg, Sam bought it, had it inplanted in Vicki. Rocky had a connecion with Vicki because she carred him that is why he wanted her to be his mother. He was drawn to Malissa in the hospital because they have a biological connection.
