Yeah, I agree with Arach. Showing them as kids means they lost are the pain and emotional baggage they've carried with them as adults, and are starting over together young and innocent almost like they're picking up where they left off when they first met.
The snot nosed kid was just another kid the begger was trying to get money from. Of course he looks like the assassin and the axe gang leader, two eyes, nose in the middle of the face, mouth just below it. It's kind of a regular asian kid's face. If someone had an eyepatch and so did the kid that would be different.
Of course, was the kid really a swindler? Sing does use the Buddha Palm at the end. This is a mystical martial arts movie after all, Sing and the Beast where destroying Pig Style Alley while fighting, not ever wrestlers would be knocking over real walls in a fight like that. I assumed the begger really was some crazy prophet.
