When does the funny part begin?

I read Bill Murray praising this movie, so I figured, perhaps it could be worth a shot. Maybe there is at least something fun or funny about it.

He kept saying how hilarious the movie is, and what a masterpiece it is, especially compared to some other movie, that now seems like an embarrassing toy or something. I can't remember the exact phrases, but I expected this movie to actually deliver.

Well, I am at the 38 minute mark now, and nothing funny, hilarious or 'masterpiece' has found its way on the screen or the audio track as of yet. Am I missing something? Is the original audio+subtitles-versio perhaps better than the dubbed one I am watching?

I have been waiting for the funny part - I kept thinking: "This is just the beginning, so they need to get all this plot stuff out of the way, before the fun starts".

But after half an hour of thinking like that, it started to wear on me.. why does the movie keep the audience waiting for this long? Can't they already start the fun/funny part? At least throw in a joke or two, while we are waiting!

Then I started realizing that the plot isn't really anything all too interesting, and that perhaps all the stupidity that has for some reason been implemented (I thought it was some kind of parody at first, but then it just kept going, without any clear reference to anything, as far as I can tell - so, the old kung-fu movies were ridiculous in some ways, but this movie doesn't really seem to parody any of them particularly well anyway), is meant to be the comedy bit!

Say it isn't so.. please tell me that the funny part will come, if I just endure this awful slapstick and other over-the-top, ridiculous stupidity (it almost tops 'Charlie's Angels 2', and that's saying quite a lot) long enough, there WILL be something funny, right? The movie will change into a funny one, it will show comedy gold, it will be great and fun, if I just keep watching, right?

How much optimism do I still have left after all these disappointments this world and its horribly awful movies have punched into the depths of my soul..? I don't know. It seems miraculous, that I can STILL expect something to be actually tolerable, let alone good.. I must be stupid that way.

In any case, if someone could point out the time when the fun or funny bits begin, I could just fast forward through the trash to that bit and enjoy the movie.

Though .. I am starting to realize, this IS the movie, this IS what Murray was talking about. Two bumbling goofs doing incredibly awful slapstick (which I never understood anyway - why someone getting a pie thrown on their face is supposed to be funny, was always a mystery to me, even as a kid), that goes way over the top and thus is never credible no matter how much of my disbelief I suspend (talk about double negatives and weird earth phrases), IS the movie?

Is that what Murray thought was funny? If so, then this is certainly the last time I am ever going to trust his judgment on -anything-.

So much gore, yuck. I hate gore, and I don't think gore and comedy mix. Does the movie want to shock and horrify the audience, or does it want to make it laugh? Don't tell me it tries to do both and at the same time use some kind of emotional manipulation techniques..

I can't take this much longer. The whiny gay characters, the dominating old hags who misandristically treat men like shít without any punishment or anyone saying anything about it, all the typical clichés proudly used, because supposedly "making fun of all of it" makes it good.

If done properly, like in "Spaceballs", perhaps it could. But done this way, just amplifying it, and not really even parodying it in any real way, it really doesn't.

What an awful movie.. I don't think I can watch the rest of it. Unless of course, the funny bit finally appears. I am not holding my breath.

(But I take it as an endurance test.. only the strong of stomach and iron in spirit can go through these gates of gory stupidity. Perhaps watching this movie from beginning to end, would be a good prerequisite before giving a student a black belt in any martial art. But there's the danger of it measuring more of the intelligence and earth-ape-level of the student, instead of his endurance level..)

P.S. I actually saw an interview of the main goof, and I liked him - he seemed to be like a good actor, who does his best to be a good human being, or something - but for choosing to appear in this 'production', he can't really have such a good judgment, and he must be a little stupid, as well.

It's all in the symbology.

If you contextualize it, it's a take on every Kung Fu movie ever made and uses those tropes. It's hard to understand and many people don't truly "get it", but it is a masterpiece. Both serious and comedic elements are mixed to the point where you get a genuine Kung Fu movie that only takes itself seriously in moments where symbology is used.

The entire movie can be reduced to one particular scene- Sing (Chow) takes the Lotus dart from The Beast and pulls the dart out of it; The deadly element has been removed from the unopened Lotus blossom. He then opens the Lotus dart- an opening lotus is a symbol of enlightenment. He releases it into the air, where it eventually passes by his lost love in the form of a flower. Opening (cocoons, flowers, bandages, flowers, etc.) is the repeated symbol in the movie.

Honestly, if you understand the context within Buddhism, it's one of the most beautiful moments in all of film, and from a spoof, no less.

That was a wonderful response. My hats off to you.

I feel like "The Offspring" were so far ahead of their time when they wrote "It's cool to hate" because it sums up a good portion of the internet perfectly.

I forgot to add, read the English subs with Chinese audio, the English dub is terrible because they thought it would facilitate a better response from an American audience.

Am I missing something?

A sense of humour?

So at the 38 minute mark you decided to shut off the movie and post a long treatise on why you're soooo disappointed with this movie on the IMDB message boards? Or are you not really paying attention as you surf the web, liking your friends' fb posts, and reviewing your local pizza place on yelp?

It's not funny dubbed.

Considering at your own admission you don't like gore, watching a movie called "Kung Fu Hustle" isn't likely going to be an enjoyable experience.

So the film didn't connect with you, this was a rather long rant for such an occasion. I'd imagine there are a lot of films and shows that don't connect with you personally. Does it bring this kind of rant out of you every time you don't like something?

If you're not a fan of kung fu movies, you're probably not going to like this one or get the humor. The humor come from treating the audience intelligently about the subject matter.

At the end of the day I get the feeling that the movie just isn't for you, there's zero shame in that. The logical thing to do though would have just found something you actually do like and moved on with your day. The fact that you subjected yourself to something that you weren't enjoying for at least an hour, then decided to come online and type up a page and a half long rant about your negative experience is quite perplexing. Seriously do you do this for everything you don't like?

@avortac

Basically, you'd have to have seen a lot of old classic kung-fu films (and read about the history of KF films period) to get where all that crazy-a** humor was coming from. Do that, and you'll appreciate it more. If you're not used to HK film humor, or even Stephen Chow film humor, then it will definitely seem off-putting and too difficult to understand. Just do that (a hole bunch of old classic KF are online) and that should help you get the film. OH, and by the way,the one you call the "goof", Stephen Chow, directed and co-wrote the picture---half his films are crazy, weird, schizophrenic, and over the top like that--just letting you know.

So you hear that bill Murray likes this movie, see it has a large fan base, dislike it yourself, then blame the world for making movies you don't find funny? Sounds like you're the problem here dude. Back in the sadness cave for you
