why do you want to know?

"I've seen your light. It burns bright forever. No more blue tomorrows... you on high now."

reply

Because I find it hard to believe that foreigners with no Chinese background or any knowledge of the Chinese language can appreciate Chinese films.

reply

why, gzyhere?
sounds a little rascist to me...

"I've seen your light. It burns bright forever. No more blue tomorrows... you on high now."

reply

Dude I guess you're monolingual so you have no clue how dubbings and captions can essentially ruin a movie. I watched quite a few hollywood movies before I learned enough English and now in restrospect, the Chinese dubbing completely ruined them. So I've decided the only movies I'd watch are either in Chinese or in English, as they're the only two language I know. I also watched a few Chinese movies with English captions(Fist of Legend, the Chinese Odyssey etc), and believe me you can hardly enjoy those movies the way we did.

reply

You should've rephrased your original statement, because it sounded pretty racist to me.
What you really meant was 'how many of you can UNDERSTAND Chinese?'

reply

i hate dubbing, can't stand it and think it does spoil the movie. i mean what kind of crazy accent did they give chow in the dubbed version of shaolin soccer?! yeurch...
but as for subtitles: is it because of poor paraphrasing in thier translation?
if so i cannot comment as i cannot understand chinese. I can however laugh at the over pronounced staccato plosives of stephens proformance. you don't need to speak chinese to get that and other nuances which are largely intercultral.
perhaps i'm not enjoying it in the same way as you, but as most of my favorite movies are not english language that should mean something...

"I've seen your light. It burns bright forever. No more blue tomorrows... you on high now."

reply

So you're saying that no matter how good the subtitles are ,we can't fully understand/appreciate the movie as much as Chinese people do?

"Welcome to Burger Shot moĆ’uckaaa !!!"

reply

i'd say you can get up to 70%, but no more without further understanding of the wuxia subculture.

reply

I'm African-American, and really liked this film (I love kung-fu films) and had already seen a bunch of Stephen Chow films before this one, so I knew how crazy/whacked-out/weird it was gonna get (loved the scenes with the harp-playing assassins---that was near-genius) and I wasn't disappointed (except by the ending somewhat---felt that it was kind of anti-climatic, but Chow was clearly trying to do something different by subverting the usual KF-film cliches, which was interesting to watch.)

reply

Because I find it hard to believe that foreigners with no Chinese background or any knowledge of the Chinese language can appreciate Chinese films.

Well, that is just ig'nant. lol

You must believe in yourself when no one else does...like, right now, for instance.

reply

Racist. Or ignorant. Either that, or you worded your sentence completely wrong. And need to improve on your English.

reply

I am not Chinese and consider this movie one of my favorite movies ever (Top 10). You do not have to speak a certain language to appreciate the beauty and message of a great work of art. The director borrows or reinterprets many themes from Non-Chinese sources and that is part of what makes the movie great. If your argument held any base, no one would ever watch or like any movie unless they could understand it in their own language. I love to watch films in other languages (sub titled, not dubbed) and from other cultures. Love and Art are Universal, especially when it is great. Thats what makes us (The Universe) great.
