The judge gave him a break. He was lucky because it could have been worst as you state. I don't think that would have helped though. The drunk driving was a symptom of something bigger.

Very often as a minor if you get a DUI and it's your first time offense you get let off.... plus he wasn't really hammered or anything (though minors shouldn't have any alcohol in system I still think a 0.5 blood alcohol is low and competent). I mean was he even drunk or just at a party?
But it's not unusual to get community service for a minors first DUI.... an adult is much different, minors often get good breaks.
