Were Matt and Tim having sex?

I mean, someone on youtube said Matt was having sex with Tim while punching him on the ribs and back, perhaps Tim wasn't willing to do it, and maybe that's why Tim didn't stop him from commiting suicide.

Never thought of it until now.

That would explain why Tim was the bottom while having sex with Kyle and why he was so embarassed of the bruises when that girl asked him about it.

Opinions?

WOW! That's a very interesting POV. I never thought about it. My spontaneous thought to that scene was that Tim thought how he was letting down the family and even his brother. Letting them down by being more of a disgrace than he already was (not my POV). I mean, throughout the film (especially at the beginning), it is pointed that Tim isn't as adequate as Matt was (at least that is how he feels and even how some treats him). Matt was better, bigger, stronger, more popular (the comments the old guy made at the memorial).
So not only are Tim not those things, but he isn't even a heterosexual guy, dating and seducing girls (meaning not a man's man). He is not carrying down any kind of legacy, not even the tiniest resemblance (sexuality being perhaps the most common thing most people share - they didn't even have that!). But I do not believe that Tim was gay (but he did have a "gay experience", hence my theory is still supported), Kyle however was.

But this POV that Matt perhaps sexually assaulted and forced himself on Tim makes much more sense actually! Dan Harris recorded a commentary on this film, has anyone heard it and can confirm or deny if he commented on this theory?

massunm, yeah, I thought it was very obvious that Kyle was gay. The signs were many! Thanks for the info! =)

PS. I checked your profile, you have good taste in both movies and artists! Except (uhoh, here it comes) for "Thirteen", I hate that movie with a passion (it's the one with Holly Hunter, right?). Bob Dylan is a God among men. Hehe.

I've always thought that Tim was a sexual abuse victim, the utter shame and hate he has for his brother seems to go beyond just your run of the mill abuse.

Haha. What's your definition of "run-of-the-mill" abuse? Is there one kind that's less worse than the other?

reply

Um. NO. He was beating up his brother. There was no sexual nature to that at ALL.

I too thought this was the case. When it showed him beating Tim up, weren't they both in bed?

OMG I totally always thought that!!

I mean I agree with what one of the posters above said that Tim's shame seemed deeper than that of just being picked on and beat up by your brother and the fact that his brother himself was so secretive about it. I mean most bullying even when it's really horrible don't the parents see it. Tim's parents just thought they were normal teenage boys doing their own thing.

And correct me if I'm wrong because it's been a while since I've seen this movie but okay the scene where Tim remembers the abuse doesn't that follow the scene where Tim and Kyle were making out?

I mean what do those have to do with each other why would making out with his friend bring on the memory of that if it weren't ya know related somehow. I mean I may be stretching but this is how my mind worked the fist and second time I saw the film and those scenes...I might need a rewatch tho it's been a while.

Excellent point. It honestly didn't occur to me, but I think you may have something there. Matt may have been sexually abused in addition to being physically attacked by his brother.

I came in here to comment on this. There are other posts focused on Emile and his step-brother having sex but precisely at the moment when they are seen *sleeping* together (it's unclear whether they had sex or not) the memory that haunts him is that of his brother coming out of bed and beating him. I'm really confuse now as to whether he was being sexually abused by his older brother and even more so wondering if he was involved at all with the bully from whoop or was it just a misunderstanding with his girlfriend.

reply

The commentary by the director and actor acknowledge the beatings of his brother but makes no mention of any sexual abuse on Tim so I assume he's just haunted by the memory of the beatings, that's all.

reply

I came away with no sense the brothers had a sexual relationship.
