Remake

An American remake is being made. Not much information about it so far, though.

Whore-lywood can't come up with their own ideas any more. They now have to ruin great Japanese and Korean films with their idiocy. When will they learn that these films are great because they work within Japanese and Korean cultures! You can't simply take a film like this and change the characters to americans and have it work! Ju-On vs The Grudge was a great example...all americans living in Tokyo? What a far fetched idea! Audiences world wide are shying away from Whore-lywood for better quality cinema...and I for one am glad!

JAPAN, ASIA etc have good ideas but i do not think they present them as well as the US remakes of them! SORRY!

How do you respect or value my response if you continue to be ironic and mock the response I chose.
Just because I have not succeeded in stating the reasons for my argument I have chosen what I said and prefer that one should not only respect my opinion and challenge it but also see it from my point of view. And just because I have not stated that I encountered the originals before or after or not at all that should not alter by future responses to the films allocated.

Well you listened!!! That proves something doesn't it.

You know, personally I hate Hollywood remakes, and Hollywood's horrible unoriginality, but please don't leap on a one-sentence opinion with sarcasm and "you seem like one of those people" generalizations. It is in fact possible to disagree with a person without deserving scorn/pity.

reply

but let's not forget who did them first. It's always easy to build on an idea that isn't yours.

>>JAPAN, ASIA etc have good ideas but i do not think they present them as well as >>the US remakes of them! SORRY!

YOU mean they DON't present them AS American as THE remakes do...?

*beep* that whole Hollywood remake garbage. People should refuse to watch it. But then, people are dumb... And Hollywood filmmakers should get their asses up and start inventing their own stuff again.
As for the movie: one of the best horror flicks I've seen in a time.

reply

First up: Into the Mirror was a good movie.

But if you havnt seen any good and innovative american movies this year, or any bad asian movies yet, you need to see more movies.

If you see 20 movies recorded between 1998-2005 that are considered asias greatest smashhits and then compare them to the "average" in the great sea of american movies instead of the greatest ones, it's easy to say there's nothing good that comes from hollywood.

But here are 20 movies between 98-04 worth watching.

Big Lebowski 1998
Saving Private Ryan 1998

Boondock Saints 1999
Fight Club 1999
Magnolia 1999
Matrix 1999
Sixth Sense 1999

Gladiator 2000
Memento 2000
Requiem for a Dream 2000

Black Hawk Down 2001
Shrek 2001

Adaptation 2002
Bubba Ho-tep 2002

Big Fish 2003
Findimg Nemo 2003

Crash 2004
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004
Incredibles 2004
Million Dollar Baby 2004

...

Now redeem yourself before I give you a list of 20 awful asian movies that will make you sick of "all commercial junk" spawning from china, korea and Japan.

Btw, I am neither American, or Asian, and I watch movies from all across the world.

reply

Neither have I said that all American movies suck, nor that all Asian movies are good. Both nations produce very good and very bad results. I'm European myself, and I enjoy movies of all genres and origins. I have about 150 US movies on DVD, and about the same number of Asian, European, etc movies. About your list above, Requiem For A Dream and Private Ryan are two of my all time favourite movies, just to point some out.
My point was that the quality of Hollywood movies seems to get down a lot lately and that US film studios rip off Asian movies by remaking them. Only for one obvious reason...and that's money. You can't deny this trend, as it's been getting more and more popular over the last few years. It's just sad to see that unique and beautiful movies are sometimes remade very half-heartedly.
Again, I'm not saying all American remakes are bad (i.e. The Ring), and that Asia doesn't remake Western films. I'm aware of all that. And I don't need someone to tell me all this.
All I say is that I'm getting tired of Hollywood doing remakes of good Asian/European movies A LOT lately ...instead of sitting down and producing more of their own good movies like some that you have mentioned above. I don't need another hundreds and thousands of Hollywood remakes of mediocre Jap horror flicks like Grudge...I'd rather see more quality Hollywood movies such as Ryan, Requiem, Adaptation. That's my whole point. But nowadays, remaking movies seems to be easier and cheaper and it doesn't seem to take as much resources as thinking of own ideas and concepts. It's an awful and sad trend from American moviemakers to remake every half decent and successful Asian movie just to get a share of the pie. Or do you see Asian studios constantly remaking famous Hollywood movies? It's the quantity of Hollywood remakes that annoys me, it's getting out of hand. And the motifes behind it. Not for the love of cinema, but for cash. And the need to infect and sicken the East with Western values, standards and culture just for the sake of it.
Whatever you say, I stay with my opinion - it sucks - even if it's narrow-minded. At least one thing I have in common with Hollywood then.

id like a list of 20 bad asian films... go on...

Good and original horror between 1998 and 2005?
Um...Sixth Sense...and...maybe, Blair Witch Project?

Really, you have a point. Not a lot of good stuff in that time frame for Hollywood. Score one for Asian cinema on that one in my book.

[The Ring American horror film?!?!?!Please tell me u are joking..
The subject was the lack off original american horror films that werent ripped off from Asia]

If you only see the story, yes, I agree. But I pay as much attention to the director as the story itself. Gore Verbinski have sucessfully built an artistically good horror movie beyond cheap trash, and that's something I have alot of respect for.

[Red Dragon I wouldn't rate this among original horror films as it has been shot before and is based on a very popular novel]

Point taken.

[Saw well the writer/directors aren't american but I'll let this slide as the money came from a U.S production company]

Who's "American" really? People come from all over the world to get fundings for their movie projects.

[The Machinist Spanish film actually]

Hmm. British main actor, American 2nd role, American director, American writer... :)
Brad Anderson also directed Session 9...

[Land of the Dead Original?!?!]

George Romero's legacy. Maybe LotD is a "sequel", but it's prequels gave birth to the true Zombie movie. The kind that is as much a catastrophy movie as a horror movie, struggling with lost hope as much as zombies themselves.

[The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Can u say: exorcist for teens?]

Definitely not.
TEoER is based on a true event that happened in germany around the 70'ies.
The supernatural plays a small role in the movie. Instead the movie asks very strong questions regarding how medical treatment works in the western society.

[The Descent UK film actually]

Oh.

[And as the question was: "Give us a list of good ORIGINAL AMERICAN horror films" there are many on your list that don't qualify. I do agree with Saw and Session 9 though.]

Sorry you did not like my list then. I can say this though: I am not able to produce a longer list of ORIGINAL movies from Japan OR Korea. There are quite a few good movies from over there, but if you recognise Japan and Korea as different countries and only count the ORIGINAL movies from 1998-2006, you will see that the list isnt as long as some people would want it to be.

"and Ps. Boondock saints good?!?! Sure Mr. Duffy."

I concur. That 'film' was an utter joke.

I loved "Geoul sokeuro" so much. I truely hope that the Americans wont ruin this amazing movie. I'm not sure if I'll even go see the American version.

The latest on this remake - Alexandré Aja is supposedly directing it - a redeeming factor in my books. Switchblade Romance (i think it was known as high tension in most parts of the world - they changed the title in England for some reason :S ) was a modern horror classic, in my opinion. It really built up a great deal of suspense, and is probably the only slasher film to give me the creeps (besides the 1st Halloween). The hills have eyes remake - ok, trashy as it may habve been - was further proof that mr Aja is definately a great horror director. I loved Into the mirror, too - and i think he'l do quite a good job with the new 1.
PS - i usually hate remakes, too. the american Ring films sucked compared with the originals. WOT THE HELL is the point in remaking the omen? and the Psycho remake was extremely pointless, as well. I also hear theyr remaking tale of two sisters - i just know theyr gonna *beep* it up!

"He's not my friend, hes a funking idiot!"

Don't you think that maybe some people just simply prefer to watch american made movies? Do you think there is anything wrong with that? I think its really just a matter of preference.

reply

well... the point is.. that it aren't american made movies. It are cheap american remakes of good artistic original movies.
To me its a sign of lack of respect for the creators of the original movies. They created a story (if not based on myths) and excecuted it in a way that is intense and great plots.
And then there comes this american remake .. who actually simplyfied the story and threw in some 'good' SFX... cus that's what it's all about in the remakes.. 'the same' movie but with better SFX.. now most of the time they succeed in better sfx. but the tension and horror are missing. as well as the good story development and twists..

and honestly.. the remakes ALWAYS include Too much music and sounds. It's horrible and can destroy an entire scene or suspence piece.

I don't really mind if they remake a foreign movie.. I can imagine a director wants to take the story and make his own version of it. with his own vision. But have some respect for the original creators. and don't just do it for the money.. cause that's what it's all about as well. its about money... eye candy.. and to see all american cast... because 'that's better' .. and easier for them to see.

For example.. When I heard they were planning on making a live action movie of neon genesis evangelion.... one movie. I was like wtf. you can't just put such a complex story in one friggin' movie! they would dumb it down. the visuals were great. but you would just get some robots fighting movie. wich will be a big hit and people will think of NGE as an awesome robot fighting movie thing. but They'll miss the Real story. a story wich took a lot of time and hard work to create and excecute. but the people will never hear that story. just the fighing robots.....

also with the remake of Batlle Royale. How the hell can you take a story that evolves all around the Japanese culture and the problems with the teenagers they had in te time and couldn't ever have taken place in ANY other country... and make it american? you simply CAN'T!
you can take the Idea... and come up with a different title and NO link to the japanese movie. but then you just get a crappy action flick...

SO... Some movies are impossible to remake.. or even make (live action adaptions) ... and when they do it anyway... you get crap.. and it's very disrespectfull..
like I said before ; You CAN do it right.. but it hardly ever happens.. unfortunatly. because when people don't see the original.. they can miss a great story/movie.

but that's just my opinion ^^ you're entitled to have your own ofcourse ^^

reply

The remake was quite good. Except the final "boss battle", which was a bit over the top and Evil Dead-ish.
