I realise everyone is entitled to an opinion. However without engaging the trolls that breed on forums around here, I can't understand why said people keep going round telling others if they like something they are complete idiots! I dislike plenty of films but I don't feel the urge to open my trap and insult anyone else that does like a particular movie.
Therefore we've alread ascertained that D-Wars is not likely to win any Oscars, so for all the critic around here, which Dragon film would hit the mark?
Before answering this LOTR does not count as dragons were not the sole focues of the film and niether does Harry Potter as again the dragon is not the sole focues of the films. Apart from dragon Heart I think most dragon films are flawed so if someone can recommend one then now is your chance to answer! e.g Eragon - Part on of a trilogy that stops rather abruptly. Reign of Fire - The Dragons don't get a lot of screen time. Dragon Haert 2 - People say this ones made for kids.
The 1977 disney film "Pete's Dragon" did win an oscar nomination for its "Candle in the Wind" song and is a good film to watch once you've downed a few beers!
However, I have to agree that the film that is closest to hitting the mark is indeed Dragonslayer. Whilst it does have one or two flaws, it is the best film I have seen so far where the dragon is the sole focus of the story, so you will want to check that out.
The NeverEnding Story is also a great film (one of my favourite films ever), but Falkor the luck dragon is not the sole focus of the story so it does not count.
Dragon Fighter. I know it isn't a famous one, and it does follow the usual fighting-a-monster-killoff-formula, but it's still pretty awesome. Go rent it.
Leigh Slawner only happened because Chuck Norris was taking a nap.
OK, most of these are not dragon films, because the creatures in them are NOT dragons, they are WYVERNS. Lord of the Rings and Beowulf, in particular.
D-War was not one of the best movies I've ever seen, granted, but it's dragons were authentic mythical beings from Korean Legend. And they were a proper size.
I will not go into how laughable Beowulf was, if you know anything at all of the text.
So, best movie is probably Dragonheart, although, probably for reasons of articulating human speech, the face is crap. A western dragon has a long snout, not a blunt face that makes it look like a cross between T-Rex and a bull-terrier.
The dragons in Reign of Fire were good, but the movie was a bit pointless (and so easily could have been better).
Dragonslayer lacks action, but is worth seeing again.
Q the Winged Serpent isn't strictly a dragon film, but is definitely worth seeing. It's certainly got more balls than anything made more recently.
Haven't seen Dragon Fighter. Will have to check it out. And would love someone to find a hidden gem that shows dragons in their full glory. But sadly, i don't think it's been made yet.

I don't think it is possible to have a dragon as a pet. Maybe to be the pet of a dragon? But they're better meeting with respect. Mind you, that's not likely either. The usual way to meet a dragon is with you running in doomed terror. The meeting doesn't last very long.......

I didn't actually watch much of this movie but I was really wowed by the dragons fighting at the end, mostly because of their size, the kind which I have never seen in other movies before.
There are also video games with dragons, among them I have only played Dragon Riders on the PC and there is also Spyro the Dragon and Shining Force(the latter is for the Sega Genesis and you only fight the dragon at the end).
I have seen quite a few more 'dragon' films since writing this post, and the four most recent - Dungeons & Dragons 3, Dragon Quest, Fire & Ice and Dragon Crusaders, have ALL had wyverns, not dragons.
As Loan-burger-1 said, the dragon in Merlin is a real dragon, and again, apart from the mouth, is pretty good. TBH, I think it is the best so far.
So, Axel, I really hope the hobbit people don't follow the leads of LOTR, and that Smaug is a real dragon. Looking forward to seeing it too.

Only the two big ones were true creatures of Korean legend, the others were caricature dinosaurs with wings, caricature dinosaurs without wings and giant slug-lizards, and they looked extremely lame.
- Dungeons & Dragons (1983) - Pilot Episode - Dragon Slayer (1984) - George and the Dragon - bad CGI, but a fun movie all together - Don't know if Merlin will count, but had a dragon in it... - The Last Dragon (2004)
