Difference between metacritic rating and Imdb users

This is one of the first films that I see with such a gap between the experts rating and users rating! How come? Did the experts have a meltdown or did the users?

To my mind it's because the film gives a very one-sided, narrow view. It's from the eyes of the "rich and famous" composer looking back on the life he managed to escape. It says he is better than all the other boys because he had talent and that's all he needed to get out of that environment -next stop fame and fortune! It's inherently dishonest and rather snobbish for that view in my opinion -who's to say his story is any more worthwhile than any of the other boys'? It also basically writes-off all the others.. if only they had a talent they might have become rich and famous too.

That said, I don't think it's a bad film, but the above does annoy me and stops it rising above "average" or "nice little film to show the kids sometime." Many people watching the movie wouldn't be bothered by that, but I believe critics would be/are more annoyed than "normal viewers" by this lopsided, distorted, haughty setup. Hence the discrepancy.

No it's not... it's told directly from the diary of the prefect, Clément Mathieu, who lead him to becoming a composer by encouraging his mother to send him to the right school. The film was in no way biased towards Pierre Morhange, it simply used his older-self as a platform from which to tell the story in retrospect. The focus, however, was shared across a number of boys... the only loophole in the film was seeing Mondain on the hill to imply that he started the fire... there is no way anyone could have know this, but I think the producers handled it well enough, to reveal the truth to the viewers, given that a couple of minor events outside of Mathieu's knowledge are shown that he could not have possibly placed in his diary.
