9. Gosford Park (i know that it isnt from another country, but to people not from america, it is foreign, plus i always need subtitles for it anyway)

10. Life Is Beautiful

reply

How can you narrow the whole world's cinema (except for one country) into a top ten without leaving masterpieces out? It's impossible. You have to AL LEAST do a top 50.

reply

Agree with Jozjoz, impossible to name just 10 without leaving so many great movies, anyway I'll try to name 10 of my fave movies (the ones I remember first)

1. Los olvidados
2. Ikiru
3. Cinema Paradiso
4. El laberinto del fauno
5. Ondskan (Evil)
6. Trois couleurs: Rouge
7. Hero
8. Voyna i mir (War and Peace)
9. Amores Perros
10 Fanny och Alexander

But I could name dozens more.

Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.

I'm proud to say my poetry is only understood by that minority which is aware.

reply

Cinema Paradiso!!!

Run Lola Run

Anything by Pedro Almodovar

Love this game::
OK. Here goes
1: Aguirre (Wrath of God)
2: City of God
2b: The Return (Russian) Do watch it if you ain't seen it
3: M
4: The Devils Backbone/Pans Labyrinth
5: This is a cop out, but can't separate them, so...The Chorus, Au Revoir les Enfants and Etre et Avoir (What is it with the french and ace school movies??)
5b: Festen
5c: Il Postino. Sniff
6: Seven Samurai
7: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
8: Jean de Florette and Manon des Source
9: A bout de Souffle/Rafifi
10: Fitzcarraldo
With apologies to Pedro Almodovar, Run Lola Run and countless other films I no doubt have forgotten. Also apologies to sticklers of top tens who may justifiably point out that top tens probably should consist of only ten films. Also apologies to Asian cinema which is very poorly represented. But then my list, my pick. Ahh yes. Ohh yeah, Amelie. And I've not seen The Lives of Others so that could be fantastic. Gods must be Crazy anyone??

What about Japanese? Not even only one japanese movie has been listed here...

Anything by Kobayashi Masaki ...
Night and fog in Japan (Oshima N.)
Idioterne (L.Von Trier )
Gozu (Miike T.)
Alphaville (J.L.Godard. ) La Chinoise (J.L.Godard )
The Leopard (Visconti)
Battleship Potemkine (Eisenstein)
Anything by Jean Renoir
Fortunat (R. Joffé)
Sonatine, Jugatsu, Kukujro (Kitano T.)
Anything by Kurosawa Akira
Bright future by Kurosawa Kiyoshi

And if I'm thinking about it, it's just ridiculous to make a separate "great foreign movies" list. As if there had was a lot better of american movies...
It simply false.

(I can only see Brazil and Baron Munchausen, Sleep by Wahrol, Maybe The thin red line...)

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Downfall yet

reply

....and what about "Jeux Interdit" (Forbidden Games)? That one got to me real bad in about the same way that "Pather Panchali" did, a masterpiece from India.
Don't watch these if you don't want your heart broken. Les Choristes, which I absolutely love is like a betime story. These are very real and hit you in the gut. Both were celebrated at their 50th anniversary.

Check them out at:
