[American Psycho] Patrick Bateman is Bruce Wayne in a parallel reality

If anyone has seen the TV show Dexter, they know Dexter is a psychopath who has a very protective stepfather who guides his destructive urges into something pro-social (teaching Dexter to direct his craving for blood and violence in targeting serious criminals). Dexter also witnessed the brutal killing of his mother when he was young.

Dexter also had a brother named Brian who did not have Dexter's stepfather to guide him and teach him right from wrong. Both of the brothers could have ended up on the same path in life, but one had a guiding parent who showed them how to channel their psychopathic, traumatic impulses into something productive and the other did not. The one who did not became a serial killer who targeted random people.

So back to Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne always had psychopathic tendencies as can be seen in his behavior in both American Psycho and Batman. Inability to form close relationships. An enjoyment of violence. Duplicity and dishonesty. Callous disregard for the safety of self and others. A deep seated need for stimulation. Low levels of anxiety. Superficially charming. Both characters show these traits. Both also live in New York City.

However after witnessing his parents get killed, the Bruce Wayne who grew into batman had Alfred as his father figure. Alfred, like Dexter's stepfather, realized his stepson had a very deranged personality but he felt he could direct it into pro-social behavior.

In a parallel reality, Bruce Wayne was adopted by the Bateman family. Not because they cared about him, but because they used the courts to muscle out Alfred and because they wanted Bruce's family fortune for themselves. So they adopted Bruce, and to seal the transition Bruce adopted a new name to go along with his new family. The family kept Bruce's fortune, which helped the Bateman family grow in wealth. However Bruce's stepfather decided to give his son a do nothing job at one of his wall street companies just to keep him out of trouble.

But growing up in a family of materialism, greed, manipulation, bullying, violence, etc like the Bateman family screwed Bruce up even worse than he already was. He had all these violent, psychopathic urges he didn't understand and he would release them in destructive ways. Rather than direct his urges into pro-social directions like Dexter did, in this reality he directed them into random, destructive directions like Dexter's brother Brian did.

TL;DR - Bruce Wayne, in an alternate reality, was adopted by the Bateman family and that is what the American Psycho film is about.
