One of the things that continue to haunt me about this movie is the question whether the wife was purposely seducing the kid or not. I always thought she was more flattered and amused by the kids passionate feelings and was more likely keeping his interest by rewarding him with her increasingly intimate responses. I don't think the result of all this was something she had ever rationally planned. Any other ideas?

Same opinion as yours. She did not plan it, until the end. She just let it happen. Reminds me of Kieslowski's "A Short Film about Love", worth seeing if you haven't. Cheers

Remember she did follow the boy to a movie theater so in a way, she had some sort of a plan, maybe out of her boredom or curiosity.
