VERY underated film!`

David Duchovony really surpassed all of my expectations. I think its a brilliant movie, beautifully directed, great story, well told. Robin williams was great once again in it!
loved it!

Glad people are finding this wonderful little film. I loved it too. There is so much crap out there that this film was a breath of fresh air. But in today's world if there isn't blood, guts and gore then no one wants to bother with it. So many good films get pushed aside it really sad.

reply

I totally agree, a really underrated film.

I'm watching it on IFC right now, and I cannot take my eyes off of it. I missed about the 1st half, but it is still great. Definitely getting this on DVD.

reply

I just watched the entire movie on IFC. I never heard of the movie, and I thought it was very well done. The "wrap up" ending could have been better, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

I've loved House of D since from the start. Glad people are finally finding it.

reply

I've seen it many times and, believe it or not, I love it each time and see new things I hadn't seen before. What a gem.

I laughed and I cried. I thought it wasn't contrived and actually very touching. I can completely relate (well my problems aren't as bad but still)...i was impressed with Duchovny's writing/directing/acting abilities. It is sad that it was slammed critically, because bad reviews probably prevented people from seeing this beautiful film.

ITA with you. It really was sad that most of the critics put the film down. To this day i can't figure out why. Duchovny did a wonderful job in MHO. He did say that he hoped that it would find its audience on DVD. It actually did pretty well on DVD. It did stay in the top 50 for about 11 weeks if i remember correctly. Don't have any idea what it has made in total. There are so many films that the critics rave about that just go right over my head. I keep thinking what the hell did they see that i don't

When a film does not do well at the box office, I often use as an example that House of D made a total of $388,532 in theaters. But it took in over $3 million in rentals alone in its first week, and after just nine weeks it had taken in $14,400,000 in rentals alone. And that was as of December 2005. That does not include DVD sales, nor does it include sales and rentals in the last two years when it has become more popular due to repeated cable showings.

larry-411, where did you get those statistics? That is excellent news about this movie that never got a fair shot at the box office.

reply

Hi Flea. I got the box office totals from Box Office Mojo:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=houseofd.htm

IMDb has some numbers but they are incomplete so slightly different:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0372334/business

There are many other sources but BOM is considered the best.

I got the video rental numbers from IMDb PRO:
http://pro.imdb.com/title/tt0372334/videorevenue
I believe it's only available to PRO members but the same numbers are at other sources as well.

Being a teenager myself i find this to be a beautiful film. It is a witty and touching look at the trials and tribulations of youth because we all know it can be a difficult and overwhelming time. Beautiful film in my opinion it inspired me to write a screenplay similar based on my own experiences. To bad it didnt get a wider release.

reply

I agree Carrey. This film was too beautiful for words!
