Gram Parsons

Hello,

Was Gram Parsons playing on stage along with the rest of the Flying Burito Brothers? I don't recongise anyone who looks like him.

Great film though. A must for classic country/rock fans.

reply

As I understand it, he was already out of the group.

"Excellent, Mr. Renfield, excellent!"

Thanks

I'd never heard these guys. By their name i assumed they were a Frank Zappa-esque band, but I'd put them somewhere between The Band and the Dead

reply

LOL - if you can describe a "Zappa-esque" band, I'd love to hear them.

Would that be a Mother's of Invention thing, a Capt. Beefheart thing or perahps an '88 (the greatest band you never heard) thing?

reply

I was wondering about this too - I noticed that he is not mentioned in the credits.

reply

Are you referring to Gram Parsons or Frank Zappa?

"Klaatu barada nikto"

reply

it was bernie leadon who went on to the eagles...sneaky pete k. played pedal steel and would later play in new riders with jerry g....bass was chris hillman from the byrds and later in manasass...i think the drummer was michael clarke who played in the byrds with hillman

Somewhere between Altamont and the Festival Express, Parson's was fired, mainly for being too strung out on drugs. You can see Parsons in the movie "Gimme Shelter".

reply

Wasn't Gram Parsons, at this point, falling in love with Emmylou?

reply

"You can see Parsons in the movie "Gimme Shelter"."
You can only see the back of his head, if I remember correctly
Maybe more on a dvd extra?
And they were great, but only 1 song
At least their part in the movie isn't interrupted like the Stones and Jefferson Airplane's songs

Gram Parsons left his own band to hang out and share musical creativity with the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards especially idolized Parsons, and they became close friends. Eventually Graham Parsons founded his own solo project/band The Fallen Angels.

He died under mysterious circumstances in Joshua Tree California in 1973.

gram parsons was with the stones after he got out of the byrds

Parsons leaving the Burritos was different than leaving The Byrds. He did do the latter at the urging of the Stones because The Byrds were about to tour South Africa during its apartheid days, and Keith told Parsons that they wouldn't tour SA for that reason. When he refused to go band leader Roger McGuinn fired him with Chris Hillman's agreement. Hillman and Parsons later got past that, though, and Hillman joined Parsons to form the Burritos.

Leaving the Burritos was later and different. Suppodedly Parsons showed up blasted for a gig, and it was the last straw for Hillman. This was only a month or so before the Festival Express.
