I think you may be discounting the true nature of racism/classism in our society. It DOES make a difference to a LOT of people and I don't know anybody that would not have some questions forming in their heads about meeting the family of someone they planned to marry. It's true that there are many other factors that "characterize" a person, but the skin color/ethnicity/culture is one of those.
I would be more inclined to agree with your comment if they were not living together or planning to announce an engagement. I have known people who've "lost" their whole family of origin by marrying someone outside their race. In a casual relationship or friendship, it's fine. A more serious relationship and/or marriage is a different story.
