Why is it called Sea of Souls?

It probably refers to the spirit world, but does it refer to anything else too? Is it a quote?

Well, Souls because it is about the supernatural which can refer to the undead. And Sea because they come accross a lot of the supernatural.

I got as far as that myself, but I was wondering if it was perhaps a quote from english literature, or something like that.
